Job description

Agility's commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers—tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential.

Agility Robotics views safety not as a regulatory constraint, but as a fundamental commercial gateway that is absolutely required to move humanoid robots out of isolated work cells and into shared human environments. You can't build your robot and then make it safe - functional safety must be baked into the hardware, electrical systems, and software from day one.

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Safety Software Engineer to play a critical role in implementing a functionally safe perception system.  In this role, you will bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and functional safety principles.  You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and validate safety-critical software architecture. If you are passionate about building robust systems that push the boundaries of modern robotics and automation while maintaining uncompromising safety, we want you on our team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design & Develop: Design and implement robust, highly reliable software for safety-critical systems using both traditional functional safety techniques and emerging deep learning safety techniques.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with our machine learning, hardware, and core software teams to ensure that data pipelines, models, and middleware operate within defined safety envelopes.
  • System Architecture: Develop and optimize software running on both Linux and real-time operating systems.
  • Testing & Validation: Create rigorous testing frameworks and validation strategies to prove system reliability and safety under edge-case scenarios.
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior engineers on safety-critical coding standards and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on systems level or embedded systems programming (C++, C, or Rust).
  • Strong understanding of software architecture for embedded
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong internal drive for quality and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications

We know that great candidates come from diverse backgrounds. Even if you don't check every box below, we highly encourage you to apply.

Greatly Desired:

  • Board Bringup: Experience working with alpha hardware, performing basic tasks to run an operating system and establishing a working environment for future development
  • Perception Systems: Experience working with camera and LiDAR sensors, interpreting the output and
  • Certified Code: A proven track record of writing formally certified safety-critical code.
  • Functional Safety Standards: Deep familiarity with and practical application of standards such as ISO 26262 (automotive), IEC 61508 (industrial), or ISO 13849 (machinery).
  • ROS 2: Experience architecting and building complex robotic applications using ROS 2.
  • Machine Learning: Hands-on experience with machine learning pipelines, including data collection, dataset curation, and model training.
  • Linux Kernel: Experience with Linux kernel configuration, module development, or customization for performance and reliability.
  • RTOS Experience: Experience developing and deploying software on QNX or similar real-time operating systems and integrating into a modern CI/CD system

This is a fully remote role with the option to work hybrid if a commutable distance from our Salem, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, or Fremont, CA offices.

The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This range may change based on geographical location and may be modified in the future.

Anticipated Base Salary Range
