What is a remote Java?

A Remote Java job is a software development role that allows professionals to work from anywhere while using the Java programming language to build applications. These roles often involve backend development, API integration, cloud computing, and maintaining Java-based systems. Remote Java developers collaborate with teams using communication tools, version control systems, and project management software. Many companies offer remote Java positions to access a global talent pool and provide work flexibility.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a remote Java?

To thrive as a Remote Java developer, you need a strong grasp of Java programming, object-oriented design principles, and commonly used frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate, backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Experience with version control systems like Git, build tools (Maven/Gradle), and knowledge of cloud platforms or DevOps practices are often required, while certifications like Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) can be advantageous. Strong communication skills, self-motivation, and time management are essential for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure effective code development, seamless teamwork, and successful delivery of software solutions in a distributed work environment.

What are common challenges faced by remote Java developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Java developers often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with team members across different locations and time zones, as well as managing their own schedules for deep, focused work. To address these challenges, it helps to make use of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing, and to establish regular check-in meetings with your team. Proactively documenting your code and project decisions can also help streamline teamwork and reduce misunderstandings. Additionally, setting up a dedicated workspace and clear daily routines can boost productivity and ensure successful project outcomes as a remote developer.

Full-time

Job description

Who are we?
Smarsh empowers its customers to manage risk and unleash intelligence in their digital communications. Our growing community of over 6500 organizations in regulated industries counts on Smarsh every day to help them spot compliance, legal or reputational risks in 80+ communication channels before those risks become regulatory fines or headlines. Relentless innovation has fueled our journey to consistent leadership recognition from analysts like Gartner and Forrester, and our sustained, aggressive growth has landed Smarsh in the annual Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing American companies since 2008.
Summary
We are looking for a Senior Java Developer to join our R&D Server team and take a leading technical role in the design and evolution of both new and existing product capabilities. This is a senior individual-contributor position: you will own complex problems end-to-end, set technical direction, and raise the bar for engineering quality across a diverse set of technologies and architectures. This role also carries the responsibility of developing and supporting services within our federal enclave environment, alongside our cloud-based workloads.
This role includes dual, senior-level ownership across two key environments:
  • Owning the design, delivery, and long-term health of features within our federal enclave environment, including judgment calls on compliance, security, and constrained deployment workflows.
  • Architecting, building, and evolving services in our AWS-based production environment, leveraging and helping shape our modern cloud-native tooling and infrastructure.

The ideal candidate is a self-directed senior engineer who loves to self-learn, actively mentors and raises the level of peers, and thrives in an Agile, collaborative, and warm team environment while comfortably operating with a high degree of autonomy.
Our tech stack includes Redis, Oracle, PSQL, Kafka, Spring, Microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Jenkins, Grafana, ELK, Maven, and GitHub.
How will you contribute?
  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of complex Java-based backend services across both secure federal enclave and AWS production environments, with minimal oversight.
  • Drive architecture decisions, define scalable system patterns, and set technical standards for code quality and performance across the team.
  • Provide technical leadership within an Agile Scrum team: lead design and code reviews, guide sprint planning and estimation, and mentor mid-level and junior engineers.
  • Lead production troubleshooting and incident response, driving root-cause analysis and long-term reliability and performance improvements across diverse runtime environments.
  • Partner cross-functionally with DevOps, QA, Product, and Security teams to shape delivery plans, ensure operational readiness, and resolve cross-team technical blockers.
  • Represent the team in broader architecture reviews and contribute to engineering standards and best practices beyond the immediate team.

What will you bring?
  • At least 6 years of professional Java development experience, including demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade systems.
  • Expert-level object-oriented programming skills and deep understanding of Java internals, including JVM behavior, garbage collection, and memory management.
  • Strong track record in software engineering principles, including system design, architecture ownership, and driving best coding practices across a team.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with multi-threaded and concurrent programming in production systems.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers, leading technical initiatives, and influencing technical direction within a team.
  • Proven ability to work independently across both federal enclave and cloud-based (AWS) environments, including navigating compliance and security constraints with limited guidance.
  • Solid, production-level experience with Spring / Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
    Advantages
  • Experience working with or supporting secured / restricted-access environments, including FedRAMP, is a plus.
  • Experience supporting a FedRAMP certified product in production, including familiarity with audit and compliance processes.
  • Strong DevOps orientation, with experience designing CI/CD pipelines, containerized environments, and operational tooling strategy.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML tools or frameworks into production systems.
  • Deep background in microservices architecture at scale, including asynchronous (Kafka, messaging queues) and synchronous (RESTful APIs) communication models.
  • Strong test-oriented mindset, with experience establishing testing standards (unit, component, automation) for a team.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration platforms, including operational ownership.
  • Experience with Kafka event-driven systems at scale.
  • Experience conducting system design reviews and providing technical guidance to peers across teams.
  • Familiarity with profiling tools, code coverage tools, CI/CD systems, and capacity planning or cost optimization in cloud environments.

$125,000 - $185,000 a year
The above salary range represents Smarsh's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
Any applicable bonus programs will be discussed during the recruiting process.
The salary for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, location, specialty and training. Local cost of living assessments are done for each new hire at the time of offer.
