What does a remote iOS engineer do?

A Remote iOS Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining applications for Apple's iOS platform, such as those used on iPhones and iPads, while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include designing user interfaces, writing clean and efficient code in Swift or Objective-C, debugging issues, and collaborating with team members virtually. They may also be involved in testing, performance tuning, and submitting apps to the App Store. Communication and self-motivation are key traits since the role requires working independently and coordinating with teams across different locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote iOS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote iOS Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Swift or Objective-C, experience with iOS frameworks, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with Xcode, Git, RESTful APIs, and continuous integration tools, as well as knowledge of the App Store deployment process, is essential. Effective communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help remote engineers collaborate with distributed teams and manage projects independently. These skills and qualities are vital for building robust, user-friendly apps and ensuring successful remote teamwork and project delivery.

How do remote iOS engineers typically collaborate with product and design teams while working offsite?

Remote iOS Engineers frequently collaborate with product managers and designers through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools. Communication is key, so regular stand-ups, sprint planning sessions, and design reviews are common to keep everyone aligned on project goals and timelines. Engineers often use platforms such as Slack, Jira, and Figma to provide feedback, share progress, and resolve blockers. Despite working remotely, close coordination ensures that app features are developed efficiently and match user experience expectations.

Job description

*This role supports US-based remote work, or Palo Alto, CA based hybrid in-office.
We're looking for iOS Engineers to join our team. As part of a cross-functional scrum team you will design and develop new investment account and cash account features within our iOS app. In addition to development on the app itself, you will write automated tests and integrate with our in-house design systems and our backend API. Come help our clients and prospective clients build wealth on their own terms!
About Wealthfront Engineering
Wealthfront's culture centers around continuous learning, innovation, and quality-driven software development. With high quality software as our ultimate engineering objective, our key tactic is automation:
• Wealthfront software automates the financial services we provide to our clients, and within these services we automate the collection of data that we learn from on our way to making our services even better.
• Wealthfront engineers function as builder/operators, with dual responsibility for building the system and operating it in production. Any toil that this brings about is automated away by engineers. This investment in automation is expected, and the prioritization of it is always built into our planning and execution.
• Wealthfront engineers automate our development processes. For example, Wealthfront engineers automate all of our testing. Manual testing is not part of the software development lifecycle at Wealthfront.
• Wealthfront engineers automate observability in case of failure. If something is up, our systems inform engineers appropriately. If our systems are quiet, they are healthy.
If you are drawn to being an engineer within such an environment, and having outsized impact as an engineer at a magnitude that is only available within a company achieving greatness at our size (~350 employees, half in engineering), then we want to hear from you!
As a core member of the team, you will:
  • Build a premier native iOS application
  • Take ownership of large, complex projects from ideation through execution and delivery.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and engineering leadership to shape the roadmap and deliver a seamless and delightful user experience.
  • Work with frontend and backend engineers to design, build and test reusable REST APIs
  • Design and build high-quality infrastructure; making the right tradeoffs for risk and long-term maintainability
  • Get an opportunity to work with leadership to define the team's priorities and initiatives
  • Work independently, use available resources to get unblocked, and complete tasks on schedule by exercising strong judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to peers
  • Ensure our iOS app and iOS CI systems operate smoothly in production by triaging and resolving operational issues as part of a team of on-call engineers

This role could be a fit if you have:
  • 2 - 6 years of professional iOS development experience
  • Deep expertise with Swift and iOS frameworks - knowledge of Objective-C is a plus but not required
  • Experience creating complex and performant user interfaces with UIKit and/or SwiftUI
  • Experience writing unit tests and testable code
  • A track record of delivering high-quality, testable, and maintainable code.
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills
  • BS or MS in computer science, related field, or equivalent professional experience

Once you join, Wealthfront will:
  • Pair you with a mentor who will guide you through our structured onboarding program
  • Involve you in cross-functional planning and technical strategy discussions.
  • Support your professional development by providing feedback during weekly 1:1s and our semi-annual reviews
  • Empower you with autonomy and ownership over impactful initiatives that shape the future of our iOS platform.

Estimated annual salary range: $150,000 - $189,000 plus equity and a discretionary bonus.
Benefits include medical, vision, dental, 401K plan, generous time off, parental leave, wellness reimbursements, professional development, employee investing discount, and more!
