Job description

TeleSANE - Remote Forensic Nurse Expert

Shape the next generation of forensic nursing, one exam at a time. SAFE-T System, within Penn State's Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing, is seeking highly-skilled Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) for the position of TeleSANE - Remote Forensic Nurse Expert (part-time / on-call).

About this Position:

Somewhere tonight, a less experienced SANE is walking into an exam room alone, in a rural or medically underserved community, carrying the weight of a survivor's most vulnerable moment. Your years of independent practice, adult and pediatric, are exactly what that nurse needs in the room with them. The Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Telehealth (SAFE-T) System teleSANE team exists so your expertise doesn't stay contained to your own caseload. It multiplies, through real-time mentorship, through modeling trauma-informed, person-centered care, and through the kind of peer partnership that strengthens the whole field of forensic nursing.

As a SAFE-T TeleSANE, you provide real-time peer mentorship and quality assurance via telehealth during acute sexual assault and intimate partner violence forensic examinations across the lifespan, including pediatric cases, at SAFE-T partnered hospitals. You'll join a team of expert teleSANEs recruited from across the nation, a peer network built on the same standard you're helping set: evidence-based, compassionate forensic care, wherever a survivor walks through the door. Consultations happen from a private, secure home or office setup using equipment and technology provided by SAFE-T. You'll need reliable, secure wifi and a quiet, confidential space free of interruption to protect patient privacy.

This role is designed as supplemental work for forensic nurses already practicing as a SANE in a bedside role. Shifts cover evenings and weekends (5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Eastern), with 48 hours expected monthly and 24 of those falling on weekends. Self-scheduling within that window means you control which shifts you take around your existing position. This is an on-call, part-time wage-based position and is not eligible for benefits (health insurance, PTO, retirement).

Joining the TeleSANE team means joining a small, close-knit community of expert forensic nurses from across the country. You'll receive individualized mentorship in the teleSANE role for your own continued growth, and you will have access to a professional environment built around expertise.

You'll also be giving back to the profession that shaped you: mentoring novice forensic nurses in real time, raising the quality of sexual assault and intimate partner violence care available in communities that need it most, and contributing to research and innovation that helps set the national standard for this field. It's a chance to do work that matters at scale, as part of a nationally recognized program with demonstrated impact.

Job Duties:

  • Provide expert forensic nursing consultation during real-time, acute sexual assault and intimate partner violence examinations (via telehealth) for patients of all ages (birth through elder adult).
  • Provide 48 hours of overnight (5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Eastern) call per month, including 24 hours of weekend call monthly, via self-scheduling.
  • Complete an extensive new hire orientation, consisting of 60+ hours of virtual and in-person learning.
  • Travel to State College, Pennsylvania during your first year to attend a 3-day in-person training. We will compensate you for your travel time and expenses.
  • Attend virtual monthly team meetings (2 hours per month).
  • Complete quality assurance documentation and a post-consult survey following case completion.
  • Participate in individualized teleSANE consultation review for quality assurance and growth.
  • Attend paid continuing education and training updates.
  • Keep current with state guidelines, national standards, and evidence-based practices in forensic nursing.
  • Maintain access to high-speed internet and a confidential, quiet place within home/office to conduct virtual consultations remotely. SAFE-T will provide all equipment necessary to complete the remote consultation.
  • Be prepared to actively receive cases and provide mentorship during your scheduled call time.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Active, unencumbered nurse licensure (RN or higher) in good standing.
  • Actively practicing as a Sexual Assault Nurse/Forensic Examiner (SANE/SAFE).
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in both adult and pediatric sexual assault forensic examination, evidenced by a minimum of 30 acute sexual assault forensic examinations conducted independently per year for the past 3 years, with at least 15 annually in the pediatric population.
  • Hold SANE-A and/or SANE-P certification from the Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification (CFNC), affiliated with the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).
  • Upon hire, applicants are asked to obtain nursing compact licensure and/or applicable state licensure(s).
  • Due to the substantial investment in onboarding as well as the extended learning curve, we welcome candidates with a true interest in growing with SAFE-T over time. We are looking for candidates who will stay in the role for two or more years.

Compensation:

  • Telehealth consultation rate: $47.00/hour.
  • Base hourly rate for time spent in training, attending meetings, and conducting non-telehealth consultation work: $40.00/hour.
  • On-call availability rate: $7.25/hour.
  • Paid training and nursing contact hours provided such as training in the Danger Assessment (DA) Evidence-based Tool
  • This position is not eligible for benefits (health insurance, PTO, retirement, tuition discount).
