What is a remote international development?

A Remote International Development job involves working on global projects that promote economic growth, social advancement, and humanitarian efforts, all while operating from a remote location. These roles can include project management, research, policy development, grant writing, and technical assistance in areas like education, health, and sustainability. Professionals in this field collaborate with international organizations, governments, and NGOs to address global challenges. Strong communication, cross-cultural understanding, and technical expertise are essential for success in this field.

What are some typical challenges faced when working remotely in international development, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in remote international development roles is coordinating effectively with global partners across different time zones and cultural backgrounds. Communication barriers and limited face-to-face interaction may require extra attention to detail and proactive engagement to ensure project alignment. Successful professionals often rely on regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and strong relationship-building skills to overcome these obstacles. Adapting to digital collaboration tools and maintaining flexibility are key strategies for managing complexities and driving positive project outcomes, even when working from afar.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote international development position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote International Development, you need a background in international relations, project management, and cross-cultural communication, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with global programs. Familiarity with tools like project management software (Asana, Trello), data analysis platforms, and knowledge of grant management or international development frameworks (such as the SDGs) is valuable. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and self-motivation are essential for navigating virtual cross-border teams and dynamic project requirements. These abilities ensure effective collaboration, successful program delivery, and impactful outcomes across diverse international contexts.

Job description

Firm Description

SRJ Chartered Professional Accountants is ranked as one of the Greater Toronto Area's top accounting, cloud bookkeeping, and tax accounting firms, servicing clients across the country and worldwide. We are registered with the Chartered Public Accountants of Ontario and are known for providing professional tax and accounting services.

Vision

SRJ Chartered Professional Accountants offers a fresh new take on accounting. Specializing in cloud-based software, we help small-to-medium-sized businesses better manage their finances in a collaborative and paperless way. We help our business owners by solving their problems and giving them honest advice. As a remote firm, our experts utilize innovative technologies to empower business owners with the tools they need to grow their businesses efficiently and effectively. With a strong belief in company culture, we continuously challenge ourselves to provide exemplary service to clients while maintaining a positive work/life balance.

Our Culture

We offer an employee-centric workplace that respects your time, contributions, and value to our team. Through flexible work arrangements, competitive salaries, & a succession planning program, we believe that the only way to grow strong is to grow as a team.

As a Business Development Associate, you'll be the front line connecting SRJ's SR&ED and accounting expertise with the business owners, CFOs, and finance leaders who need it. You'll work closely with our technical and financial teams to identify prospective clients, open doors with senior decision-makers, and guide opportunities from first conversation through to a signed engagement. This is a full-cycle sales role suited to someone who's comfortable prospecting, building relationships from scratch, and translating a technical program like SR&ED into a clear business case.
What You'll Do

  • Identify, research, and reach out to prospective clients across target industries (technology, engineering, healthcare, and more)
  • Build and manage your own pipeline of qualified opportunities, rather than relying solely on inbound leads
  • Own the sales cycle end-to-end: from first outreach through qualification, proposal, and handoff to our technical/delivery team
  • Build genuine relationships with founders, CEOs, and CFOs, positioning SRJ as a trusted partner
  • Identify prospects' potential for R&D and other government incentive programs, as well as their funding needs
  • Partner with SRJ's technical and accounting teams to shape proposals that address each client's specific situation
  • Deliver presentations and pitches to prospective clients and industry contacts
  • Stay current on SR&ED program changes, related government incentives, and market trends, and bring that knowledge into client conversations

What We're Looking For

  • 5 years of experience is sales
  • Experience in SR&ED sales preferred, ideally in a complex or consultative selling environment
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • A track record of generating your own pipeline and hitting sales targets
  • Comfort speaking with senior decision-makers (CEOs, CFOs, founders) and adapting your pitch to their priorities
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, written and verbal
  • Familiarity with SR&ED, government grants, or professional services sales is a strong asset
  • Self-motivated and organized, with the ability to manage your own time and pipeline with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Comfortable working with standard business software/CRM tools
