Remote Intern Power Plant information

What is a remote intern power plant?

A Remote Intern Power Plant is a student or recent graduate who works remotely, often from home, to support power plant operations, engineering, or related projects. These interns assist with data analysis, research, process optimization, and documentation, all while communicating with their team virtually. This role provides hands-on experience in the energy sector without requiring physical presence at the power plant. It is ideal for those studying engineering, environmental science, or similar fields who seek industry experience in a flexible, remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote intern power plant?

To thrive as a Remote Intern Power Plant, you need foundational knowledge in electrical or mechanical engineering, energy systems, and safety standards, usually supported by enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with SCADA systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and basic data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective virtual communication skills help interns stand out in remote environments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient plant operations and successful collaboration with onsite and remote teams.

What types of projects can a remote intern power plant expect to work on, and how is collaboration managed with on-site teams?

As a Remote Intern Power Plant, you may be involved in projects such as data analysis of plant performance, assisting in the development of maintenance schedules, or supporting environmental compliance documentation. Collaboration is typically managed through regular virtual meetings, project management tools, and clear communication channels with on-site engineers and supervisors. While you might not be present physically, you’ll be expected to coordinate closely with various departments, provide timely updates, and proactively seek feedback to ensure your contributions align with plant operations. This remote setup offers valuable exposure to real-world challenges while building your skills in teamwork and technical problem-solving.

Job description

Mechanical Designer - Power Industry
Location: Remote
Experience Required: 4-10 years

Position Overview
We're a dynamic team of engineers and designers supporting a wide range of projects in the power sector. As a Mechanical Designer, you'll play a key role in developing detailed piping and mechanical equipment layouts and 3D models for power generation plants, carbon capture facilities, and other energy-related infrastructure.
You'll contribute to the design of systems such as:
  • Steam cycle systems
  • Boiler feed and condensate systems
  • Water treatment
  • Fuel handling
  • Hydraulic and heat transfer systems
  • Conveying systems
  • Air and gas systems
We work on large-scale EPC projects and offer a diverse portfolio that includes gas-fired generation, power delivery, renewables, carbon capture, and environmental retrofits. This is a great opportunity to grow within a collaborative and forward-thinking environment focused on innovation and high-performance project delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Produce piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), layout plans, sections, and 3D models for various power plant systems.
  • Design mechanical systems including rotating equipment, HVAC, compressed air and gas systems, and service water systems.
  • Check design deliverables to ensure compliance with industry codes, project specifications, and internal standards.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure accuracy and constructability.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers or interns.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality and accuracy.
  • Identify and incorporate design changes as needed to meet budget and schedule goals.
  • Attend and contribute to project meetings.
  • Support project development and execution with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Qualifications
  • 4-10 years of experience in mechanical or piping design within the power generation, industrial, or oil & gas sectors.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Design, or related engineering field preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling tools such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, SmartPlant3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or similar.
  • Experience checking for design interferences and constructability in a 3D environment.
  • Strong background in developing P&IDs, plot plans, and construction drawings.
  • Able to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage time and priorities effectively.

Additional Information
  • Full-time, onsite role based in Lenexa, KS
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Flexible work options and excellent benefits offered
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Regular, reliable attendance and the ability to meet project deadlines are required
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required
