Remote Intern Kotlin Developer information

What is a remote intern Kotlin developer?

A Remote Intern Kotlin Developer is an entry-level position for individuals gaining practical experience in software development using the Kotlin programming language, while working remotely. These interns usually assist in developing, testing, and maintaining applications—often for Android or backend systems—under the guidance of experienced developers. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities, exposure to real-world projects, and experience with remote collaboration tools and practices. It's ideal for students or recent graduates seeking to deepen their Kotlin skills and understand the workflows of a professional software development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote intern Kotlin developer?

To thrive as a Remote Intern Kotlin Developer, you need a solid understanding of Kotlin programming, object-oriented principles, and basic software development concepts, often supported by relevant coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with development tools like IntelliJ IDEA, version control systems such as Git, and experience with Android Studio or backend frameworks is typically expected. Strong communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills are crucial for collaborating in a remote environment and managing tasks independently. These skills and qualities are essential to contribute effectively to team projects, learn rapidly, and deliver quality code in a distributed setting.

How does a remote intern Kotlin developer typically collaborate with their team, and what tools are commonly used?

As a remote intern Kotlin developer, you will regularly interact with your team through digital communication platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom. Code collaboration and version control are typically managed using Git and platforms like GitHub or GitLab. You'll likely participate in daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, and sprint planning sessions, ensuring that you're aligned with project goals and able to seek guidance when needed. Clear communication and proactive updates are key to successful remote teamwork in this role.

How you'll make an impact

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that power automated verification workflows, financial data integrations, and approval decisioning.
  • Develop distributed systems, APIs, and event-driven services that improve the scalability, reliability, and reuse of verification capabilities across multiple lending products.
  • Build platform capabilities that enable reusable financial data connections, streamline connection lifecycle management, and reduce operational overhead for internal engineering teams.
  • Partner with Machine Learning, Product, Risk, Fraud, and Compliance teams to integrate data, decisioning logic, and risk models into production systems while maintaining correctness and auditability.
  • Improve system reliability through comprehensive testing, monitoring, observability, and operational best practices for business-critical services.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the verification platform by improving architecture, engineering standards, and shared infrastructure that accelerates product development across Upstart.
