Salary:

Lead Coding Auditor / Audit & Quality Assurance Manager

The Lead Coding Auditor directs the independent audit function covering inpatient, outpatient, and surgical coding (PWS 3.2) and serves as the company's Quality Assurance lead for the overall contract, addressing the Government's evaluation interest in "quality control procedures to ensure timely and accurate performance."

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead independent coding audits (inpatient, outpatient, surgery) validating coding accuracy, documentation sufficiency, sequencing, DRG assignment, and E/M level correctness.
  • Develop the Audit Project Plan, including sampling methodology to a 95% confidence level, for each audit task order (PWS 4.0 deliverable, due at start of audit task order).
  • Conduct exit briefs with VA stakeholders and prepare the Audit Findings Report with remediation recommendations within 10 business days of audit completion.
  • Design and maintain the contract's overall Quality Control Plan, including coder-level accuracy monitoring to sustain the 95% accuracy performance standard (PWS 5.0).
  • Coordinate with the Coding Operations Lead to translate audit findings into targeted coder coaching and process corrections.
  • Support the CDI/Training Lead by identifying documentation gaps and specialty trends surfaced during audits to inform training content (PWS 3.3).
  • Maintain standardized audit reporting formats and evidence files consistent with VHA and NCCI guidance.
  • Track and report audit metrics as part of the monthly coding summary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of medical coding experience, including at least 3 years specifically in acute/outpatient coding audit and/or coder education roles (PWS 6.0).
  • Demonstrated ICD-10-CM/PCS proficiency across inpatient, outpatient, and surgical settings.
  • Experience designing statistically valid audit sampling plans (95% confidence level).
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills; experience presenting audit findings to clinical and administrative stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of DRG methodology and E/M leveling.

Required / Preferred Certifications

  • Active credential required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, or ICD-10 Trainer (per PWS 6.0), consistent with the elevated experience threshold for auditors.
  • CDIP or CCDS a plus, given overlap with documentation-quality findings.

Security & Compliance

  • Subject to VA background investigation/fitness determination per assigned risk tier before EHR/audit-data access is granted.
  • Must complete VA privacy/security and records-management training prior to performance start.
  • Ensures audit work products and findings are handled per PHI/PII and federal records management requirements (PWS 10.0).
