To thrive as a Remote Infrastructure Engineer, you need expertise in network management, cloud computing, and server administration, often backed by a degree in computer science or IT and relevant certifications like AWS, Azure, or Cisco. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for success in remote and collaborative environments. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure management, supporting business continuity and efficient operations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote infrastructure roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in remote infrastructure roles often encounter challenges such as coordinating across time zones, troubleshooting issues without physical access to hardware, and maintaining clear communication with distributed teams. To address these, it's important to leverage robust remote monitoring and management tools, establish standardized procedures for incident response, and use collaboration platforms to stay connected with colleagues. Regular check-ins and thorough documentation also help ensure that everyone stays aligned and issues are resolved efficiently.

What is remote infrastructure?

Remote infrastructure refers to the combination of hardware, software, networks, and services that allow IT systems to be managed and accessed from remote locations. This setup enables organizations to operate, monitor, and maintain servers, storage, databases, and network resources without needing on-site presence. Remote infrastructure is essential for supporting remote work, cloud computing, distributed teams, and business continuity. It often involves the use of cloud platforms, virtual private networks (VPNs), monitoring tools, and automation to ensure secure and efficient operations.

Your expertise will span endpoint platforms (Windows 11, Intune, Autopilot), cloud-based solutions (Microsoft 365, Azure), networking, system integrations, and administration. This role is the organization's subject-matter expert on endpoints and Windows 11 OS, while also serving as a key contributor to L2 support and the service delivery queue. You will collaborate with senior engineers, ensure the successful delivery of technical solutions aligned with strategic objectives, and enable a fully distributed, remote workforce.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Endpoint Management & Support:
  • Serve as the primary endpoint specialist and subject-matter expert on Windows 11 OS - including imaging, deployment, hardening, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Manage endpoint configuration, compliance, and security policies using Microsoft Intune.
  • Deploy and maintain Windows Autopilot for zero-touch provisioning of new and replacement devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve endpoint hardware and software issues across Windows and, when applicable, Apple/macOS/iOS platforms.
  • Ensure all endpoints meet security and compliance baselines including BitLocker encryption, Microsoft Defender, and patch compliance.
  • Support Endpoint Lifecycle Management including procurement coordination, deployment, refresh, and decommissioning.

Service Delivery & Support:
  • Provide Tier 2 support for all aspects of the infrastructure including endpoints, servers, and networking.
  • Identify and troubleshoot systems and network issues; escalate complex problems as needed.

Infrastructure & Cloud Support:
  • Implement and maintain infrastructure solutions that meet the organization's current and future needs.
  • Support Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive, and Identity & Access Management.
  • Implement and support third-party tools and technologies to enhance system efficiency and performance.
  • Assist Senior Engineers with Azure infrastructure tasks and projects as directed.
  • Own support of assigned software tools and platforms.

Performance Optimization & Security:
  • Monitor system and infrastructure performance to ensure the highest levels of availability, reliability, and scalability.
  • Implement and maintain security measures to safeguard the organization's infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, keeping abreast of security best practices.

Project Leadership:
  • Lead small to medium-sized infrastructure-related projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to project milestones.
  • Participate in larger infrastructure projects, executing assigned tasks on time and to standard.
  • Develop and maintain basic PowerShell scripts to support automation efforts under guidance from senior staff.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Solid troubleshooting methodology for hardware, software, and network connectivity issues.
  • Apple/macOS/iOS device management experience is a plus.
  • Scripting and automation skills (PowerShell preferred).
  • Ability to understand operational business processes and apply technical/system knowledge.
  • Must demonstrate excellent professional communication skills through clearly written, concise, and comprehensive documentation; strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong organizational, customer service, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently in a remote environment and collaboratively as part of a distributed team.
  • Able to support after-hours operations as needed.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Proven experience as a Systems Engineer with a focus on infrastructure and endpoint management (minimum of 2 years).
  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, and Windows 11 OS deployment and management.
