What is a remote information technology?

A Remote Information Technology (IT) job involves performing IT-related tasks, such as software development, cybersecurity, system administration, or technical support, from a remote location rather than an office. These roles rely on internet connectivity, cloud-based tools, and collaboration software to manage and support IT infrastructure. Remote IT jobs offer flexibility and can be done from anywhere, making them ideal for professionals looking for work-life balance. Companies hiring for remote IT roles often seek skilled individuals who can troubleshoot technical issues, develop software, or manage networks independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote information technology?

To thrive in a Remote Information Technology role, you need a solid foundation in IT systems, troubleshooting, and network management, often demonstrated through a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools, cybersecurity measures, and certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified IT Professional are highly beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and proactive problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills ensure you can effectively support and secure systems, collaborate with distributed teams, and maintain productivity without in-person oversight.

How does working remotely in information technology impact collaboration and communication with team members?

Working remotely in Information Technology often means collaborating with team members across different locations and time zones, primarily through digital channels like video meetings, chat platforms, and project management tools. Clear and proactive communication is essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals, deadlines, and troubleshooting efforts. Teams frequently schedule regular check-ins and utilize shared documentation to keep workflows transparent and efficient. While you may have fewer face-to-face interactions, most organizations in this field provide structured virtual support and training to help you integrate smoothly with your colleagues and stay connected.

Job description

As Metrics is bidding to support the Veterans Health Administration, we are looking for an Information Technology Specialist to support the National Telestroke Program. This position is fully remote.

The Veterans Health Administration's National Telestroke Program (NTSP) connects VA facilities with remote vascular neurologists through telehealth technology so Veterans get timely, high-quality acute stroke care. The program's Informatics function provides its technology and data backbone, and its data environment recently moved from on-premises to a cloud platform hosted on Databricks while continuing to exchange data with VA's enterprise Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) and operational systems.

In this role, the IT Specialist will support everything from document repository and tracking tools on VA Teams and SharePoint, to maintaining the program's SharePoint and web sites alongside the team's Web Developer. In addition, the Specialist will support administration of the cloud data environment, and provide technical support to Telestroke sites and operations.

What you'll do

  • Establish and maintain the task order's Microsoft Teams channel and SharePoint document repository on the VA network, organized by task order year with sub-folders for meeting agendas and minutes, on-boarding records, invoices with COR acceptance, and deliverable documentation
  • Maintain the personnel tracking list, deliverable tracking list, invoice folders, and deliverable folders, and support development and maintenance of the budget execution and status-of-allowance tracking tool
  • Prepare and upload weekly task order management meeting artifacts before each meeting, and post-meeting assessments with action items within two business days after
  • Coordinate with the COR on contractor on-boarding, VA system access, Talent Management System (TMS) training compliance, and off-boarding
  • Maintain and support NTSP SharePoint, Internet, and Intranet sites, including user groups and permissions, outdated content and broken links, and compliance with VA Directive 6102
  • Prepare content for posting — PDF design, graphics, code validation, metadata, Section 508 compliance, and format conversion — in accordance with the VA Style Guide, and verify copyright permissions and signed releases before posting
  • Monitor website architecture and performance across Accessibility, Quality Assurance, and Search Engine Optimization, and support transition of website maintenance to the Government at task order conclusion
  • Support administration of the NTSP cloud data environment
  • Provide technical support to internal and external sites and to call center operations

What you need — minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of relevant experience — OR seven (7) years of relevant experience without a degree
  • Able to obtain a favorable VA Tier 2 (moderate risk) background investigation, including fingerprint adjudication, a credit check, and verification of your degree

Before you apply: your resume needs to show the four years (or seven without the degree), and it needs to name the platforms. So if you have built with Power Automate or PowerApps or administered SharePoint, say so by name and say where.

Nice to have

  • Microsoft Power Automate, Microsoft PowerApps, and a full suite of applications related to automation
  • SharePoint Online site administration, permissions, and content management
  • Section 508 accessibility remediation and the VA Style Guide (design.va.gov)
  • Prior work inside VA or VHA, or in a similarly complex environment such as a large integrated healthcare system or a Federal health agency
  • Telehealth or clinical end-user technical support

Schedule and work environment

Fully remote; work is performed at remotely. Tasks are performed within the program's operating window of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.

Who does well here

Ownership — when a Telestroke site cannot connect, you own it until it is fixed and documented. Precision, because a permissions change on a SharePoint site work has to be right the first time. A sense of urgency, since the sites you support are running acute stroke care.
