Job description

Job Title: HR Generalist (Onsite)

Industry: Construction / Engineering

Location: Sterling, VA (Relocating to Reston, VA in August)

Assignment Type: Contract with potential for permanent hire

Pay: $30.00–$32.00 per hour

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM (40 hours/week, fully onsite)

Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).

About the Company:

Our client is an established organization in the construction and engineering industry, supporting complex infrastructure projects across multiple states. They are seeking an experienced HR Generalist to join their team and provide day-to-day human resources support in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Job Description:

The HR Generalist will oversee a broad range of human resources functions, including talent acquisition, employee relations, compliance, onboarding, training, and HR administration. This role partners closely with leadership to maintain a positive workplace culture while ensuring compliance with employment laws and company policies. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and comfortable working in an onsite setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate full-cycle recruiting activities for hourly and salaried positions, from job postings through onboarding.
  • Serve as a trusted HR resource by responding to employee questions, addressing workplace concerns, and supporting positive employee relations.
  • Maintain employee records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations, including EEO, OSHA, and workers' compensation requirements.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating new hire orientation, employee training, and required compliance programs.
  • Support payroll administration by reviewing timekeeping records and partnering with payroll to resolve discrepancies.
  • Lead Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) initiatives, including policy administration, reporting, investigations, and employee education.
  • Maintain accurate HRIS records and generate reports as needed.
  • Partner with managers during performance review cycles and assist with employee development initiatives.
  • Support workplace safety efforts in coordination with leadership and safety personnel.

Qualifications:

  • 3–5 years of HR Generalist experience (total professional experience should not exceed five years).
  • Previous experience in construction, engineering, manufacturing, or another labor-intensive industry strongly preferred.
  • Multi-state HR experience, including California employment law knowledge, is highly preferred.
  • Exposure to unionized work environments is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, payroll support, training, and EEO administration.
  • Familiarity with HRIS platforms and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Additional Details:

  • Start Date: Early to mid-July
  • Assignment expected to continue through late November.
  • This position is 100% onsite; remote or hybrid work is not available.
  • Overtime is not expected but may be available with prior management approval.
