Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and organized HR Generalist to support our multi-location retail operations. This position will primarily focus on recruiting and talent acquisition while also assisting with key HR operational functions such as leave administration, HRIS maintenance, and employee documentation compliance.
This role will be remote and ideally located in Northern Michigan to support hiring and HR operations across retail locations in the Northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula. The HR Generalist will partner closely with the HR Director and store leadership to support workforce needs and maintain consistent HR processes across locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition
  • Manage full-cycle recruiting for retail and operational positions
  • Post job openings, review applications, and conduct initial candidate screenings
  • Coordinate interviews with hiring managers and assist with hiring decisions
  • Support local recruiting efforts including job fairs and community outreach
  • Maintain candidate pipelines for frequently hired roles
  • Track recruiting metrics including applicant flow and time-to-fill

HR Operations
  • Assist with leave administration including FMLA, ADA accommodations, and other protected leave requests
  • Maintain accurate employee records within the company's HRIS system
  • Monitor completion of onboarding tasks, policy acknowledgements, and required documentation
  • Support HR compliance processes and documentation audits
  • Assist with employment verifications and unemployment claim coordination

Payroll Support
  • Serve as a backup to the Payroll Administrator as needed
  • Assist with payroll-related documentation, audits, and employee record updates
  • Support coordination of payroll inquiries or corrections when necessary

Field Support
  • Provide HR support to retail leadership teams as needed
  • Conduct periodic visits to retail locations to support hiring, onboarding, and HR initiatives
  • Escalate employee relations concerns to the HR Director when appropriate
  • Support implementation of HR programs and policies across locations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of Human Resources or recruiting experience
  • Experience supporting recruiting processes in a multi-location or retail environment preferred
  • Basic knowledge of employment laws including FMLA, ADA, and general HR compliance practices
  • Experience working with HRIS systems and electronic employee file management
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally
  • Must pass background check

Preferred qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar HR certification
  • Experience supporting payroll processes
