We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced FHIR Software Engineer to lead and drive the design, development, and implementation of healthcare data exchange systems using FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards. The ideal candidate will deeply understand FHIR and related technologies and provide architectural guidance, technical leadership, and strategic direction in integrating and modernizing healthcare systems.

This is a fully remote, full-time position.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architectural design and implementation of healthcare interoperability solutions based on FHIR standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to development teams, ensuring compliance with FHIR and HL7 standards, best practices, and healthcare data security requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product owners, healthcare professionals, and IT teams, to translate business needs into scalable, interoperable solutions.
  • Develop architectural roadmaps, define technical requirements, and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs, ensuring seamless data exchange across healthcare systems.
  • Conduct assessments and provide recommendations on FHIR adoption and integration strategies, considering legacy system modernization and cloud migration.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, ensuring data privacy, security, and proper use of healthcare information.
  • Stay current with emerging FHIR standards, regulations, and healthcare trends to guide innovation and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Extensive experience with HL7 FHIR standards, including creating and publishing custom HL7 FHIR Implementation Guides (IG) and profiles.
  • In-depth understanding and hands-on experience with USCDI standards and US Core IG, with practical applications; working knowledge of USCDI+ and QI Core IG is a plus.
  • Proven experience in setting up, evaluating, and benchmarking HL7 FHIR servers for optimal performance, including the use of synthetic data for testing.
  • Experience documenting work in Confluence, writing user stories and tracing progress in Jira.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless data exchange, while acting as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Communicate complex FHIR solutions effectively to both business and IT stakeholders ensuring consensus and alignment.
  • Comfortable working within CMS guidelines and frameworks with strong preference for candidates experienced in quality measurement, reporting and healthcare data exchange.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in software architecture and development with a focus on healthcare applications.
  • Extensive experience in FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and HL7 standards.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare interoperability and data exchange patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with API design and implementation, including RESTful services and JSON/XML.
  • Knowledge of other healthcare interoperability standards such as CDA, CCD, or X12
  • Proficiency in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including hands-on experience in architecting and deploying FHIR solutions in a cloud environment.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and CMS interoperability mandates.
  • Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and version control (Git).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, and ability to work in fast-paced environments.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Certifications in FHIR, HL7, or cloud platforms (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert) is prefered.
  • Experience in government consulting prefer.
  • Experience in management consulting is preferred, and a client-facing role is a plus.
