What are remote historical researchers?

Remote historical researchers are professionals who investigate, analyze, and interpret historical data from various sources while working outside of traditional office or archive settings, often from home. They use digital archives, online databases, and other virtual resources to conduct their research, compile reports, and provide insights into historical events, people, or trends. This role often supports academic, genealogical, governmental, or private sector projects, and requires strong analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills. Collaboration is typically done via email, video conferences, and shared digital tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Historical Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Historical Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in historical methodologies, and often an advanced degree in history or a related field. Familiarity with digital archives, citation management tools, and research databases like JSTOR is typically required. Outstanding written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills ensure the accurate interpretation, synthesis, and presentation of historical information while maintaining productivity outside a traditional office.

Many teams utilize cloud-based databases to share resources and updates in real-time, making it easier to coordinate research tasks and maintain project momentum. Clearly communicate usability analysis, recommendations, and potential design solutions
Create persuasive presentations geared towards product owners, developers, visual designers, other UX team members, and c-level executives
Facilitate internal meetings to triage/manage research findings
Previous experience with design or research projects involving complex workflows, visualization of large datasets, operating system-level tools, and both web and software environments is a plus.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, or related field
4+ years of experience applying research to highvolume, interactive B2B and B2C desktop applications, rich Web-based applications, or platform-level tools
