Work EnvironmentHome-based, independent coding tasksHome-based, billing and claims processing
Industry UsageHospitals, clinics, insurance companiesMedical practices, billing companies, insurance firms

Remote Health Coding and Remote Medical Billing are related healthcare roles often performed remotely. Coding involves reviewing medical records and assigning codes for billing, while billing focuses on submitting claims and managing payments. Both require similar certifications and are used across healthcare providers and insurance companies. Understanding their differences helps job seekers find the right role aligned with their skills and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Health Coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Health Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, coding systems (such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS), and a relevant certification like CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) software and coding/billing platforms is essential for accurate and efficient work. Attention to detail, time management, and strong written communication skills make professionals stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and effective remote collaboration in the healthcare industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote health coding, and how can they be overcome?

Remote health coders often encounter challenges such as staying current with frequent changes in medical coding standards (like ICD-10 and CPT updates) and maintaining strong communication with healthcare teams despite working from home. To overcome these challenges, coders should prioritize continuous education through webinars and training programs, and leverage collaboration tools such as secure messaging platforms to stay connected with peers and supervisors. Establishing a structured daily routine and a dedicated workspace also helps maintain productivity and accuracy while working remotely.

What is remote health coding?

Remote health coding is the process of translating medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized codes from a location outside of a traditional healthcare facility, such as from home. These codes are used for billing, insurance claims, and record-keeping. Remote health coders access patient records electronically and must follow strict privacy regulations. This job requires knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and often certification. Remote health coding offers flexibility but also demands attention to detail and strong technical skills.

Job description

Job Description
A bit more about this role:
Devoted Medical seeks a Board-Certified Psychiatrist to serve as Behavioral Health Medical Director & Clinical Architect for our virtual-first, risk-bearing Medicare Advantage payer-provider practice. This is a high-impact, 50/50 hybrid leadership and practicing clinician role designed for a population health innovator. You will spend 50% of your time as a strategic builder designing a brand-new Serious Mental Illness (SMI) care paradigm (targeting schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar, and severe recurrent mood disorders) within a geriatric primary care model. The remaining 50% will be spent as a vanguard practitioner carrying an active clinical panel and serving as the primary prescriber for our highest-acuity members. Operating as our sole internal psychiatric leader, you will scale an integrated Behavioral Health Collaborative Care (CoCM) ecosystem built directly into our proprietary, AI-driven EMR, Orinoco.
Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Architecture & Serious Mental Illness (SMI) Program Design
  • Invent the Paradigm: Act as the primary builder and subject matter expert designing our upcoming longitudinal Serious Mental Illness (SMI) care model.
  • Value-Based Care Execution: Because Devoted Medical is a full risk-bearing "payvider" entity, you will design clinical strategies optimized for Total Cost of Care (TCOC) reduction and ED diversion, completely liberated from the constraints of traditional fee-for-service billing codes.
  • EMR & AI Product Partnership: Partner directly with our clinical operations and engineering teams to continuously build and optimize our proprietary, from-the-ground-up EMR (Orinoco), integrating generative AI tools to reduce clinician burden and simplify workflows.
  • Quality & Outcomes Governance: Define and track the program's ultimate scorecard utilizing advanced, population-health KPIs (symptom remission, 30-day psychiatric readmission rates, and member engagement).

2. Vanguard Psychiatric Practice & Primary Care Interface
  • Direct-Care Delivery: Act as the primary, hands-on treating psychiatrist and prescriber for our most complex, medically fragile geriatric members during critical stabilization windows.
  • Systemic Multi-Disciplinary Reviews: Direct structured, data-informed case reviews with your panel of behavioral health care managers, providing expert Medical Management advice.
  • Primary Care Curbside Ecosystem: Scale our internal asynchronous psychiatry e-consult program, providing rapid, seamless diagnostic and psychotropic guidance to our wider network of Primary Care physicians and APPs.
  • Clinical Supervision: Work closely with the BH social work manager to provide clinical oversight and serve as the key clinical escalation point for the behavioral health team.

Attributes for Success: (The "Happy Warrior" Profile)
  • You Sweat the Details: You can pivot effortlessly from drafting a 3-year population-health roadmap to auditing individual clinical charts and shadowing virtual social work visits.
  • Startup Motor & Extreme Independence: You thrive on an island. You do not wait for hyper-directive governance; you work cross-functionally across a matrix to resolve operational gaps yourself.
  • Wired for Learning and Change: You are entirely comfortable testing innovative pilots, evaluating real-time data, and rapidly scrapping things that fail.
  • Servant Leadership: You understand that your ultimate success is measured by how effectively you empower, mentor, and elevate your frontline social work team.

Skills & Experience Requirements:
  • Board Certification: Active Board Certification in Adult Psychiatry.
  • Clinical Depth: Minimum of 2-3 years of active clinical experience, ideally managing high-acuity SMI, treatment-resistant mood disorders, or complex geriatric/D-SNP populations.
  • Integrated Care Mastery: Practical experience working within, or designing, Collaborative Care (CoCM) or integrated behavioral health workflows.
  • Virtual Operations: High comfort level with telehealth models and data-driven clinical registries.
  • Licensing Agility: Licensed in (or willing to proactively obtain) multiple state licenses as we scale our virtual footprint nationally.
