Bet Tzedek Legal Services is seeking a Finance & Grants Analyst to join its Finance team. This role is a key contributor to the organization's grants management and financial compliance infrastructure and is designed for a highly independent professional capable of managing grant financial processes with limited oversight.
The Finance & Grants Analyst is responsible for coordinating and analyzing grant and contract financial activities across public and private funding sources, ensuring accurate revenue recognition, billing, compliance, and reporting in accordance with GAAP, funder requirements, and internal policies. This role exercises independent judgment and discretion in managing workloads, resolving issues, identifying risks, and recommending process improvements that impact grant performance, cash flow, and compliance. The position collaborates closely with program leadership, the grants finance team, and accounting leadership, and regularly engages in analysis, planning, and problem-solving related to staffing costs, allocations, billing structures, and grant financial forecasting. The role handles confidential salary, contract, and financial data and plays an active role in month-end close, audits, and funder monitoring activities.
This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services' hybrid/remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek's offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload and business needs. Candidates must be located in the Southern California region and able to commute if needed.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Independently manage the financial coordination of grants and contracts from award through closeout, ensuring compliance with funder terms, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
• Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all assigned active grants and contracts and ensure accurate setup and ongoing maintenance in Bet Tzedek's financial systems.
• Prepare and review grant and contract billings, including cost-reimbursement and flat-rate invoices, exercising judgment in allowable cost determinations and documentation sufficiency.
• Accrue and recognize grant revenue monthly, including preparing and posting journal entries and reconciling grant activity to the general ledger.
• Monitor accounts receivable related to grants and contracts and coordinate with accounting to resolve payment discrepancies, timing issues, and funder inquiries.
• Develop and maintain grant-level budget tracking and budget-to-actual analyses; identify variances and communicate financial risks and trends to management.
• Coordinate payroll and non-payroll cost allocations for assigned grants, including review of allocation methodologies for reasonableness and compliance.
• Serve as a point of contact for financial documentation and support during grant audits, funder reviews, and monitoring activities.
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve grants finance processes, reporting tools, templates, and controls; recommend and implement enhancements in collaboration with leadership.
• Prepare financial schedules, analyses, and supporting documentation for the annual audit and funder audits.
• Collaborate with program staff to support financial planning, grant amendments, re-budgeting requests, and funder reporting requirements.
• Manage competing deadlines and priorities independently, escalating only material risks, compliance concerns, or exceptions.
• Perform other related grants and accounting duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration; or a combination of education and experience.
• 2 to 4 years' experience in nonprofit grant accounting.
• Excellent working knowledge of nonprofit accounting including revenue recognition and donor restrictions.
• Recent experience with modern accounting systems, preferably Financial Edge.
• Knowledge and experience with accounting for grants, contracts, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Proven analytical skills with direct experience regarding financial statements is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of the payroll cycle is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable cycles.
• Proven ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of constituent service and response.
• Excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills conducive to the supporting of multiple programs with various needs.
• Experience analyzing financial data, generating recommendations, and working with diverse team members to successfully communicate and implement recommendations to achieve financial goals.
• Experience working in diverse cultural settings, pro-active and ability to relate and identify with the specific needs of the department as well as other staff.
• Excellent proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office products.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
• This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
Salary
$80,000 - $85,000 (DOE/DOE)
