What is a Remote Geotechnical Engineer job?

A Remote Geotechnical Engineer analyzes soil, rock, and subsurface conditions to support infrastructure projects while working from a remote location. They use geotechnical software, review site data, and collaborate with project teams through digital tools. Responsibilities may include designing foundations, assessing slope stability, and evaluating ground risks. Remote engineers often work with on-site teams to provide technical support and recommendations. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to interpret geotechnical data without direct site visits.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Geotechnical Engineers and how are they addressed?

Remote Geotechnical Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited site access, coordinating with field teams, and ensuring clear communication across time zones. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging advanced remote sensing technologies, regularly connecting with on-site personnel through video calls, and maintaining detailed project documentation. Proactive communication and robust project management systems help ensure everyone stays aligned, and many firms offer virtual collaboration tools to bridge the distance gap. Adapting to these remote workflows enables engineers to contribute effectively, no matter where they are located, while maintaining high project standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Geotechnical Engineer position, and why are they important?

A Remote Geotechnical Engineer needs a solid background in geotechnical engineering principles, soil mechanics, and site investigation, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and PE certification or equivalent. Familiarity with geotechnical modeling software (such as PLAXIS or GeoStudio), CAD tools, and remote project management platforms is essential. Strong written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to collaborate effectively across distributed teams are highly valued soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate analysis, seamless project coordination, and successful project outcomes in a remote work environment.

Job description

Title: Geotechnical Engineer

Location: Seattle, WA

Job Type: Regular Full-time

What's the Opportunity?

Anchor QEA is seeking a geotechnical engineer with 5 to 10+ years of experience to support existing clients and help expand our geotechnical, environmental, civil, and water resources engineering practices. The position presents an opportunity for the candidate to expand their leadership and mentorship responsibilities and apply their engineering experience to challenging new technical problems. The candidate will work directly with senior company staff and will perform technical work, including technical studies and engineering design related to coastal and waterfront development projects, water resources including restoration projects, slope stabilization and slope repair, and geotechnical issues as well as contractor management and construction oversight. The position will also include opportunities for increasing task and project management responsibilities, along with mentorship of technical engineering staff. While the position will be based in the Pacific Northwest, the candidate will be part of a geotechnical engineering team supporting projects throughout the U.S. and Canada. Project/task management and client management experience is also a plus.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Attend project meetings, develop scope of work documents, and prepare proposals for engineering projects.
  • Perform and/or oversee technical analyses and calculations, develop recommendations and prepare reports for engineering projects.
  • Work with other specialists, including subconsultants and internal team members, related to geotechnical, remediation, and restoration services.
  • Assist with development and review of design documents and supporting deliverables including engineering drawings and calculations, technical specifications, and opinions of probable cost.
  • Perform task management, including team assignments and coordination, contractor management, develop budgets and schedules for projects, and manage their successful completion.
  • Develop and execute field investigation and laboratory testing plans at upland and in-water project sites (position may require travel and/or field work for up to approximately 20-30%, depending on project needs; actual amount of time will vary over the course of a year).
  • Assist with development of construction planning and observation documentation, construction oversight and management services.

What Are We Looking For?

Ideal candidates will have the following:

  • BS degree from an accredited program in Civil Engineering (a M.S. degree is preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in related engineering field
  • PE licensure in Washington (or ability to obtain within 1 year of hiring)
  • Experience managing projects/tasks and interfacing with clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A willingness to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously, across disciplines internally and externally, adhere to deadlines, and work in a client service-oriented team environment.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
