Job description

DevSecOps & Automation Engineer (Remote)
Job number: 862
This is a remote position.
Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people's needs and transform their experience of government.
Work on things that matter
Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We've helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we're also changing how the government approaches technology.
Built for a remote life
Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.
Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture
Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren't heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.
The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
The DevSecOps & Automation Engineer supports the design, automation, deployment, and optimization of secure, scalable, and compliant systems across VA programs. This role enables continuous delivery, infrastructure modernization, and operational excellence for mission-critical applications supporting Veterans. The engineer ensures alignment with VA OIT architecture, TRM-approved technologies, federal cybersecurity standards, and ATO requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
DevSecOps Engineering & Automation
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines using VA-approved tools (e.g., Git, Jenkins, Jira, etc)
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning using IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible) within VA-approved cloud environments
  • Integrate automated security scanning, dependency checks, and compliance gates into delivery pipelines
  • Support containerization and orchestration using Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or VA-approved platforms

Cloud & Infrastructure Operations
  • Deploy and manage applications in AWS, Azure, or VA Enterprise Cloud environments
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting using tools such as CloudWatch, ELK, Splunk, Dynatrace, or Prometheus
  • Optimize system performance, reliability, and scalability for high-availability VA systems

Security, Compliance & ATO Support
  • Ensure all systems meet VA cybersecurity, FISMA, NIST 800-53, and Zero Trust requirements
  • Collaborate with ISSOs and security teams to support ATO documentation, vulnerability remediation, and continuous monitoring
  • Implement secure configuration baselines, patching, and compliance automation

Collaboration & Delivery
  • Work closely with developers, QA, product owners, PMs, and VA stakeholders to streamline delivery workflows
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and support iterative delivery across Scrum or SAFe environments
  • Provide technical guidance on DevOps best practices, automation strategies, and cloud adoption

Operational Support & Troubleshooting
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across application, infrastructure, and pipeline layers
  • Support release management, environment configuration, and production deployments
  • Maintain documentation for infrastructure, pipelines, and operational processes
  • Support modernization of legacy VA systems (VistA, VES platforms, VA.gov services) into cloud-native architectures

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of DevOps, cloud engineering, or automation experience
  • Experience supporting federal agencies (VA, DoD, HHS, DHS, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, IaC, and cloud platforms
  • Strong understanding of federal cybersecurity frameworks and secure DevOps practices
  • Experience with containers, orchestration, and automated testing frameworks
