To thrive as a Remote Game Server Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, Java, or Python), understanding of network protocols, and experience with scalable server architectures, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), containerization tools (like Docker), and version control systems (such as Git) is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. Remote Game Server engineers commonly face challenges such as ensuring low-latency, high-availability connections for players across different regions and managing real-time data synchronization. To address these, engineers often implement scalable cloud-based architectures, use load balancing, and continuously monitor server health and performance. Collaboration with game developers and QA teams is crucial to quickly identify and resolve issues, while regular updates and patching help maintain server stability for a seamless player experience.

What are remote game servers?

Remote game servers are specialized computers or cloud-based systems that host multiplayer video games and enable players to connect and interact over the internet. These servers handle critical tasks such as managing game data, player connections, and real-time communication to ensure a smooth gaming experience. By operating remotely, they allow players from different locations to join and play together without needing to host the game on their own devices. Remote game servers are essential for online multiplayer games and are managed by game developers or third-party providers.

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. • Guide the product philosophy, vision, and roadmap for our ad formats so that they are engaging for users and performant for our advertising partners
  • Lead cross-functional execution with engineering, data science, design, marketing, partnerships, legal, policy to build, test, and launch revenue products that are beneficial for our advertisers & users
  • Clearly communicate roadmaps, priorities, experiments and decisions across a wide spectrum of audiences from partner teams to executive levels
  • Together with other product teams, evolve our suite of ad formats for businesses across game studios, developers, and advertisers
  • Build out a roadmap of experiments and growth levers for our ad formats at Discord
  • Empathize and relate to our users, especially those who are the most active on Discord

What you should have

  • Strong product sense for the ad formats space with deep understanding of how users engage with advertising
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments, excited about finding simple solutions to complex problems, and then executing on them
  • 5+ years experience shipping great software, driving prioritization, making trade-off decisions, and setting timelines
  • An understanding of AI offerings within the tech world and how to use them effectively
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and effectiveness working closely with engineers
  • Track record of driving impact via rapid experimentation towards a metric goal for an advertising tech product
  • Strong analytical ability to quickly organize and leverage data (including writing SQL) to make informed product decisions with cross-functional stakeholders

Bonus points

  • Experience working with ad formats and advertising platforms from other companies
  • Experience working with rewarded ads formats and the gaming advertising vertical
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant technical experience

Benefits And Perks

  • Comprehensive medical insurance including Health, Dental and Vision (plus up to $20,000 for gender affirmation procedures)
  • Mental health resources and quarterly wellness stipends
  • 19+ paid holidays, 4 weeks of PTO, use-what-you-need sick days and volunteer time off

About Us

Discord is a voice, video and text app that helps friends and communities come together to hang out and explore their interests - from artists and activists, to study groups, sneakerheads, plant parents, and more. With 150 million monthly users across 19 million active communities, called servers, Discord has grown to become one of the most popular communications services in the world. Discord was built without selling ads or user data and instead, offers a premium subscription called Nitro that gives users special perks like higher quality streams and fun customizations.

In a world of polarization, social curation, and loneliness, Discord is working toward an inclusive world where no one feels like an outsider. We believe in the value of genuine human connection, which can so easily be lost online. So we're building a space where everyone can find belonging from the inside out.

If this strikes a chord with you, come build belonging with us!

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $196,000 to $245,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level.
