Remote Game Development information

What is remote game development?

Remote game development refers to the process of creating video games while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or any place with internet access. Teams collaborate using online tools for coding, design, art, and communication, allowing for flexible work arrangements. Remote game development has become increasingly popular as technology enables seamless collaboration across different locations, time zones, and even countries. This setup can help studios access a wider talent pool and support better work-life balance for developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote game developer?

To thrive as a Remote Game Developer, a solid background in computer science, game design principles, and programming languages such as C++, C#, or JavaScript is essential, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems (e.g., Git), and sometimes certifications in game development tools are typically required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities help remote developers collaborate effectively and manage their time independently. These skills ensure seamless project delivery, innovation, and high-quality gameplay experiences in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote game developers and how can they be addressed?

Remote game developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across time zones, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring version control of shared assets. To overcome these, teams frequently use collaboration tools like Slack, project management platforms, and version control systems such as Git. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation are also essential to keep everyone aligned and productive. Proactively addressing these challenges helps maintain a cohesive workflow and fosters a positive remote team environment.

Adastra is seeking a Data Product Owner with experience building data products from the ground up. This role will be accountable for how data products are developed and delivered, with a primary focus on supporting critical business and operational data domains. This includes ensuring end-to-end data pipelines are developed in a scalable, repeatable, and well-governed manner.

Initially, this role will focus on collaborating with cross-functional data professionals to migrate data from legacy environments into the organization's centralized enterprise data platform. Given the emphasis on data modernization and migration, additional high-priority data domains may also fall within the scope of this role. This leader will partner closely with stakeholders across Data & Analytics and key business functions throughout the organization.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong background in data, solid technical depth, excellent product and project management skills, outstanding communication and stakeholder management capabilities, and a passion for delivering tangible results in a dynamic environment. This Data Product Owner will connect strategic priorities and business requirements with an interdisciplinary team of data specialists, including data engineers, architects, and analysts, to prioritize and execute key deliverables.

Primary Location: Across Canada or USA

  • Support strategic thinking on prioritizing data migration efforts from legacy environments into the enterprise data platform
  • Serve as a steward of critical operational and business data assets, maximizing their value to support business outcomes
  • Work in an Agile environment, continuously reviewing business needs, prioritizing and maintaining the backlog, refining roadmaps, planning sprints, and identifying opportunities and risks
  • Provide hands-on leadership by facilitating design sessions and driving decision-making while balancing short-term benefits with long-term strategic objectives
  • Support the cross-functional pod in clarifying requirements and features, including definitions of done (DoD) and acceptance criteria
  • Partner with engineering leaders to balance the delivery of business-driven features with foundational platform capabilities that drive scalability and resiliency
  • Build a culture of learning, knowledge sharing, and high performance. Assign tasks based on team members' skills, strengths, and development goals
  • Advocate for the highest standards of technical and operational excellence, ensuring scalable, repeatable, and well-governed solutions

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
