What is a remote game artist internship?

A Remote Game Artist Internship is a temporary, entry-level position where aspiring game artists work remotely to create visual assets for video games. Interns may assist with concept art, character design, environment art, textures, or animations under the guidance of experienced artists. This role helps build industry experience, refine artistic skills, and expand a portfolio while collaborating with a development team. It also offers exposure to game development pipelines, software tools, and remote teamwork.

What are the typical responsibilities of a remote game artist intern, and how do they interact with the broader game development team?

As a Remote Game Artist Intern, you’ll often work on creating and refining visual assets such as character models, environments, or UI elements under the guidance of senior artists and art directors. You’ll collaborate regularly with other team members—including programmers, designers, and animators—by attending virtual meetings, sharing progress updates, and incorporating feedback to ensure consistency with the game's visual style. Tasks may vary from week to week, providing exposure to different aspects of game art and development workflows. This internship structure offers valuable hands-on experience and insight into how art contributes to the overall game production pipeline, while helping you build a portfolio and industry connections for future growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a remote game artist internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Game Artist Intern, you should possess foundational skills in digital illustration, 2D/3D art creation, and familiarity with design principles, often supported by a portfolio or relevant coursework in game art or graphic design. Experience using industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Blender, or Unity is typically required, while formal certifications can enhance your candidacy. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively in a remote, multidisciplinary game development team. These abilities are essential for delivering high-quality assets on schedule, adapting to feedback, and contributing creatively to game projects from a distance.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We're building a brand-new, US-based, fully remote game studio developing new slot games, and we're looking for an experienced Game Designer to drive the vision for our games.
In this role, you'll collaborate with a small multidisciplinary team to lead the creation of new games from the ground up with a strong focus on delivering standout themes and high-performing mechanics.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Collaborate closely with mathematicians, artists, animators, and sound designers to bring your game to life
  • Playtest and iterate on your game's math, mechanics, game flow, and visual presentation with an eye toward creating the best player experience possible
  • Produce and maintain clear design documentation for your game

  • Regularly play competitors' games in the iGaming and land-based spaces to stay abreast of industry trends and new mechanics

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU
  • 5+ years of experience designing real-money slot games for iGaming or land-based markets
  • Degree in Mathematics, Game Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent written communication skills, especially the ability to clearly communicate complex and creative concepts to stakeholders across the globe
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging game mechanics, and player expectations
  • Familiarity with wireframing software such as Figma or Balsamiq
  • You should:
    • Be able to move comfortably between strategic and detailed levels
    • Bring strong organization and structure to a fast-moving environment
    • Be extremely creative, designing experiences that are intuitive and fun
    • Obsess over detail and refinement
    • Provide, accept, and act on feedback constructively
