What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote FTTH Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote FTTH Design Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications engineering, fiber optic network design, and relevant academic qualifications such as a degree in electrical or telecom engineering. Familiarity with GIS software, AutoCAD, and FTTH-specific design tools, as well as certifications like FOA or CFOT, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in collaborating with distributed teams and solving complex design challenges. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient FTTH network designs that meet industry standards and client requirements in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote FTTH Design Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote FTTH Design Engineers often face challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams, ensuring design accuracy without physical site visits, and managing multiple project deadlines across different regions. Effective communication, proficiency in GIS and CAD software, and strong organizational skills are essential to overcome these hurdles. Utilizing collaborative tools and regularly scheduled virtual meetings can help maintain alignment and ensure that designs meet both client and regulatory requirements.

What is a Remote FTTH Design Engineer?

A Remote FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Design Engineer is a professional who designs and plans fiber optic networks that deliver high-speed internet directly to residences and businesses. Working remotely, they use specialized software and engineering principles to create detailed network layouts, assess feasibility, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Their role often involves collaborating with field teams, optimizing network performance, and supporting the deployment of fiber infrastructure without being physically present on site.

What is the difference between Remote Ftth Design Engineer vs Remote Fiber Network Planner?

AspectRemote Ftth Design EngineerRemote Fiber Network Planner
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in fiber opticsEngineering or technical degree, certifications in network planning

About the Role

We are looking for a hybrid Designer/Engineer to join our Product Experience team. This is a high-impact role focused on raising the bar for both craft and execution across one of the most innovative TMS platforms on the market. Our software connects shippers, brokers, and carriers-and we're constantly working to make complex workflows feel simple, fast, and reliable.
You are a designer who ships code, or an engineer with exceptional design instincts. You will be a full-time member of the design team, responsible not just for how things look, but how they are built and delivered. A core part of your role is closing the gap between design and production.
Our team is AI-first and builder-led. Work starts in an LLM, moves quickly into code, and then into Figma for system alignment and polish. We're looking for someone who thrives in that loop and uses AI to move faster without lowering the bar.
This role reports to the Director of Product Experience. This is a remote position based in the US. The successful candidate will work from home.

What we care about:
  • Builders: You ship. You're comfortable in code, prototype in the browser, and use AI tools to accelerate how you work.
  • Taste: You know what good design looks and feels like and have strong instincts for layout, interaction, and visual detail. You care about getting the small things right.
  • Outcome ownership: You are accountable for outcomes, not just artifacts. You care whether the work actually improves the product.
  • Clarity from ambiguity: You can take a vague problem, define a path forward, and drive it through to a shipped solution.
  • Attention to quality: You hold a high bar for craft and implementation-and know when to move fast.
  • Curiosity & judgment: You ask good questions, understand tradeoffs, and make thoughtful decisions.
  • Communication: You work effectively in a remote, async environment and can clearly explain decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Writing: You understand that writing is design and can craft clear, effective UX copy.
How we work:

Design here is hands-on and code-driven:

  • Start in Figjam and/or an LLM (e.g. Gemini, Claude) to clarify problems, explore approaches, and identify requirements.
  • Prototype quickly in code (e.g., Figma Make) to explore flows and interactions.
  • Validate ideas and refine solutions through feedback from customers and stakeholders.
  • Use Figma for system alignment and visual polish.
  • Stay involved through implementation, launch, and measurement of adoption and usage patterns.
What you'll do:
  • Own work end-to-end: Define problems with PMs and Engineers, explore solutions, validate direction, and ship improvements that move key outcomes.
  • Prototype in code: Use AI tools and modern dev workflows to build and iterate on real interfaces. Partner with engineers to take the best ideas into production.
  • Write production code: Contribute to front-end components and features using web technologies (JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Angular). Improve quality, consistency, and speed of delivery.
  • Bridge design and engineering: Ensure what we design is buildable and what we build meets the design bar. Close gaps quickly.
  • Design for simplicity: Handle complex workflows by keeping the default experience clear and intuitive.
  • Raise the bar on quality: Refine interactions, states, and details. Address design and tech debt, including usability and accessibility issues.
  • Reduce system gaps: Align Figma and production. Contribute reusable components and patterns.
  • Validate with customers: Talk to users, run quick tests, and use feedback to adjust direction.
  • Contribute to team culture: Share work early, participate in design reviews, and help improve how we design and build-especially with AI.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years designing and building web-based SaaS products.
  • Strong front-end skills (JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Angular) and comfort shipping code.
  • Experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor) as part of your workflow.
  • Ability to move fluidly between design and code.
  • Experience working closely with PMs and Engineers to define and deliver work.
  • Strong product thinking, interaction design, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Git and modern dev workflows and deployment pipelines.
  • Portfolio that demonstrates both design craft and shipped work.
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to make hiring decisions that reflect our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Senior Product Design Engineer candidates based in Dallas, TX are preferred.

Compensation Range: $100,000 - $180,000
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
