What are some common challenges faced by remote freshman software engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote freshman software engineers often face challenges such as communication barriers, time management, and adapting to company workflows without in-person mentorship. To overcome these, it’s important to proactively reach out to teammates for clarification, regularly attend virtual meetings, and use collaboration tools to stay connected. Setting a structured daily schedule and seeking feedback can also help new remote engineers stay productive and grow within their teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Freshman Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Freshman Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and often a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic cloud platforms, and collaboration tools such as Slack or Jira is typically required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills are crucial for effective remote teamwork and independent progress. These skills ensure you can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to remote workflows, and continuously develop as a software professional.

What is a Remote Freshman Software Engineer?

A Remote Freshman Software Engineer is an entry-level developer, typically in their first year of college or with minimal professional experience, who works on software projects from a remote location rather than in an office. These roles often involve tasks like coding, debugging, and collaborating with a team using online tools. Remote freshman software engineers gain hands-on experience while managing their own schedules and learning industry practices from home or another location. Employers often provide training and mentorship to help them transition into the software engineering field.

Your teams are responsible for building everything from usage rating engines to the crucial APIs that serve as the gateway for all internal services to communicate with our central billing platform, Zuora. An ideal candidate will have extensive experience leading teams that build reliable, service-oriented architecture and can balance long-term strategic thinking with the immediate needs of the business.

Your Impact & Responsibilities

  • Guides design and architecture decisions for our billing services, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, and aligned with long-term business and technology goals.

  • Partners with Product, other engineering teams, and business stakeholders to align on priorities, refine requirements, and communicate engineering progress for billing roadmaps.

  • Drives strategic planning, OKR execution, and cross-team coordination to consistently deliver on commitments.

  • Establishes and champions a culture of engineering excellence, operational ownership, and continuous improvement across the organization, including the adoption of modern tools and AI to enhance developer productivity.

  • Identifies and mitigates technical risk early, escalating blockers and communicating tradeoffs to leadership proactively.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a background in building complex, service-oriented systems.

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, with a demonstrated track record of managing other managers and leading multiple engineering teams.

  • Proven experience leading globally distributed teams and fostering a strong, unified culture.

  • Deep architectural understanding of cloud-native services and the ability to guide technical discussions across a diverse technology landscape (including Java, Go, and Python).

  • Experience with event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Kinesis) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).

  • Experience working in an Agile environment with mature CI/CD practices.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex technical and business topics with a wide range of audiences, from individual engineers to senior executives.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain senior engineering talent and engineering leaders.

Preferred

  • Hands-on experience with billing, payments, rating engines, or financial technology systems.

  • Direct experience with subscription management platforms like Zuora, particularly in an API gateway or service-layer context.

  • Experience with modern observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).

  • Experience managing services in a multi-cloud environment (AWS, GCP).

This is a remote opportunity, but candidates must reside near one of our hub locations for occasional collaboration: Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; San Antonio, TX; Denver, CO

Benefits
