Remote Founding Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Founding Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Founding Engineer, you need a deep background in software development, systems architecture, and ideally startup experience, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Mastery of cloud platforms, version control (like Git), and familiarity with frameworks relevant to the product, as well as experience with DevOps tools, are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, self-motivation, and strong communication skills help remote founding engineers stand out, especially in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. These combined skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable products, driving innovation, and collaborating effectively while working remotely in an early-stage company.

What is a Remote Founding Engineer?

A Remote Founding Engineer is a key technical team member who helps launch and build a startup from its earliest stages, working entirely or primarily from a remote location. They are responsible for designing and developing the initial product, making crucial technical decisions, and often establishing the company's engineering culture. Founding Engineers typically collaborate closely with the company’s founders and may have a significant influence on the startup’s direction. Their role often includes both hands-on coding and broader responsibilities such as hiring, setting up processes, and scaling technology as the company grows.

What are some unique challenges and rewards of being a Remote Founding Engineer in an early-stage startup?

As a Remote Founding Engineer, you'll face the challenge of building core product features from scratch while collaborating virtually with other founders and early team members. This often means balancing rapid, iterative development with high-quality code, all while helping to set technical direction and culture remotely. The role is highly rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic environments and value broad ownership, as your contributions directly shape the product and the company's future. You'll also gain valuable experience in both technical leadership and startup operations, positioning yourself for significant career growth and potential equity rewards.

Job description

About Summation
Summation is building the future of business planning and analytics by bridging the gap between data and decision-making. We empower organizations to transform complex data into clear, actionable insights that drive business outcomes. Our AI-native platform pairs advanced data models with intuitive workflows to make enterprise performance management simple, collaborative, and effective.
The Role
As a Staff Product Engineer at Summation, you'll be the senior front-end leader on our team, reporting directly to our CTO and owning the front-end architecture and experience of our product end to end. This is a hands-on, deeply technical role where you'll spend your time building, not just advising, and is a role for someone with a sharp product sense who has designed and shipped polished, ambitious products from the ground up.
You'll set the technical direction and quality bar for our front end and establish the patterns the rest of the team builds against. Our product is analytics-rich and highly interactive, which makes the front end one of the hardest and most important parts of what we do: dense, data-heavy interfaces that still need to feel fast, clear, and effortless. You'll partner closely with the CTO, our Founding Designer, and product team to turn ambitious ideas into interfaces that perform.
As a Series A company approaching product-market fit with our first customers, we're at the point where the front-end foundations you lay will define how well we scale. You'll have influence over both architecture and product direction, the autonomy to make consequential decisions, and direct access to the people setting company strategy. If you're energized by ownership, thrive in the ambiguity of an early-stage startup, and want your work to shape the product and the team around it, this is the role for you.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the front-end architecture and user experience of our product end-to-end from concept through shipping and iteration
  • Set the bar for front-end quality, patterns, and performance, and help establish the standards the team builds against
  • Partner directly with the CTO, Founding Designer, and product team to shape direction and translate ambitious ideas into polished, performant interfaces
  • Build responsive, scalable, data-dense interfaces for analytics and AI-driven workflows
  • Bring a strong product perspective to engineering decisions, advocating for the user at every step
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years of dedicated, hands-on front-end product development - building products, not solely platform or library work.
  • Experience building and shipping a product from zero to one with end-to-end ownership, as a founding or early engineer at a startup or with equivalent ownership inside a larger company
  • A track record of shipping to internal or external users and iterating based on their feedback
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar languages

What Success Looks Like in Your First 6 Months
  • First 30 days: You've ramped on the codebase, product, and customers, shipped your first meaningful improvements, and formed a clear point of view on the state of the front end and where it needs to go.
  • 60 days: You've identified the highest-leverage gaps in the existing front-end architecture and started addressing them, sharpening the patterns the team builds against while shipping polished, customer-facing features alongside the CTO and Founding Designer.
  • 90 days: The quality and performance bar you've raised is visible in the product, interfaces feel faster and more cohesive, and your refined patterns are becoming how the team builds by default.
  • 6 months: You're the clear owner of the front end. You've meaningfully leveled up the architecture you inherited, shipped ambitious data-dense features customers rely on, and influenced product direction beyond just the front end.

Nice to Have
  • Hands-on experience building interfaces backed by LLMs or agent frameworks
  • Background in analytics, data visualization, or AI-driven products
  • Familiarity with financial software, models, or data
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers (not required for this role)

Location & Work Modality
This is a hybrid role with a team based in Bellevue, Washington; however, we're open to remote arrangements for candidates on a case-by-case basis
AI Policy in Interviews
We use AI pragmatically in our work, and we welcome you to do the same during interviews. You're free to use AI tools for syntax, semantics, or general API questions. We ask that you not use AI to solve interview problems or generate substantive code or logic; we're interested in how you think, communicate, and incorporate feedback.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and equity options
  • Flexible (unlimited) paid time off
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
  • 401(k) plan
  • Parental leave
  • A collaborative environment where your voice matters
  • Opportunities for growth and career development
  • The chance to work on cutting-edge technology that is transforming how businesses plan and execute
