The Opportunity
HKA is seeking an experienced Forensic Electrical Engineer to lead investigations, develop expert opinions, prepare reports, and provide testimony in complex claims, arbitration, and litigation matters. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-value, technically challenging disputes involving power systems, utilities, renewable energy, data centers, industrial facilities, and other critical infrastructure assets.
Working alongside some of the most respected experts in the industry, you'll join a small, prestigious team with a strong reputation in the market, significant autonomy, and a direct impact on both client outcomes and the continued growth of the practice.
Responsibilities
  • Analyze electrical systems, equipment failures, construction issues, and engineering deficiencies.
  • Conduct forensic investigations and root cause analyses involving electrical power, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Develop independent technical findings and expert opinions.
  • Prepare forensic engineering reports and expert witness reports.
  • Support attorneys, insurers, and clients in claims, disputes, arbitration, and litigation matters.
  • Review engineering designs, construction documents, operating records, and applicable industry standards.
  • Serve as a testifying expert in mediation, deposition, arbitration, and litigation proceedings.
  • Communicate complex technical findings clearly to legal, technical, and non-technical audiences.

Skills & Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Expert witness experience, including depositions, arbitration, and/or trial testimony, with experience preparing expert reports and working directly with attorneys on litigation, claims, disputes, and other legal matters.
  • 10+ years of Electrical Engineering experience, including forensic consulting, engineering design, project management, operations, and/or expert advisory work.
  • Experience investigating electrical failures, equipment malfunctions, construction defects, operational incidents, and complex engineering disputes.
  • Strong technical expertise in electrical power systems, power distribution and controls, instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, and electrical failure analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to prepare defensible technical reports and present complex engineering findings to attorneys, clients, arbitrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout the year for site inspections, client meetings, depositions, arbitrations, and trial support, including occasional short-notice travel.

Preferred
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Multi-state PE licensure.
  • Additional experience serving as an expert witness or providing forensic engineering, claims, dispute resolution, and litigation consulting services.
  • Significant design or project management experience in one or more of the following industries:
    • Solar photovoltaic (PV) and renewable energy systems
    • Utility generation, transmission, distribution, and substations
    • Power generation facilities and power plants
    • Data centers and mission-critical facilities
    • Transportation and infrastructure projects
    • Heavy industrial, manufacturing, or process facilities
