Remote Firmware Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Firmware Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Firmware Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems programming (typically in C/C++), microcontroller architectures, and debugging hardware-software interactions, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Familiarity with tools like JTAG debuggers, in-circuit emulators, version control systems (e.g., Git), and sometimes certifications like Embedded Systems Professional are valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, effective written communication, and self-motivation help you excel in a remote setting and collaborate with distributed teams. These skills ensure reliable product development, seamless integration of hardware and software, and efficient teamwork across distances.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A remote firmware engineer with extensive experience, specialized skills in embedded systems, and working for high-paying companies or in senior leadership roles can earn $500,000 or more annually. Such roles often require advanced certifications, a strong portfolio, and expertise in hardware-software integration.

How to make $70,000 a year from home?

A remote firmware engineer can earn $70,000 or more annually by gaining specialized skills in embedded systems, programming languages like C and C++, and experience with hardware integration. Building a strong portfolio, obtaining relevant certifications, and working for companies that support remote work can help achieve this income level.

What does a typical day look like for a Remote Firmware Engineer?

A typical day for a Remote Firmware Engineer often involves writing and reviewing embedded code, debugging firmware issues with hardware prototypes, and collaborating with hardware and software teams through video calls or project management tools. Engineers may spend time reading datasheets, integrating new features, and participating in code reviews to maintain code quality. Coordination with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers or QA, is common to ensure seamless product development. The role also includes documenting designs and troubleshooting customer-reported issues, making strong communication and time management essential for success in a remote environment.

Will the firmware engineer be replaced by AI?

Firmware engineers design and develop low-level software for hardware devices, a role that requires problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of hardware-software interactions. While AI tools can assist with coding and testing, they are unlikely to fully replace firmware engineers due to the need for complex decision-making and specialized knowledge in embedded systems.

Are firmware engineers in demand?

Firmware engineers are in high demand due to the growth of embedded systems in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, and IoT. Skills in C, C++, and real-time operating systems are particularly valuable, and job opportunities are often available for remote work across various regions.

What is a Remote Firmware Engineer job?

A Remote Firmware Engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software (firmware) that runs on embedded systems, often working with hardware components. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless hardware-software integration. This role requires proficiency in programming languages like C and C++, as well as an understanding of microcontrollers, processors, and communication protocols. Working remotely, they utilize version control systems, debugging tools, and cloud-based collaboration platforms to contribute efficiently.

Job description

At i3 Product Development, we are a place for people who love to build, learn, and stay curious, especially when the problems are complex. As a Software Engineer, you will join a multidisciplinary team of designers, engineers, and problem-solvers working together under one roof to turn ideas into real, functioning products.

Our projects span the medical, agricultural, industrial, consumer, health and wellness, and recreation industries, so the technical challenges are always evolving. One project may involve developing a cloud-based application for a connected product; the next could focus on designing web services, integrating IoT devices, or solving a complex software architecture challenge. With more than 100 projects each year, the work is varied, fast-moving, and highly collaborative.

About the Role

This role is ideal for an experienced software engineer who enjoys technical problem-solving, systems thinking, and working directly with clients and cross-functional teams.

You will contribute throughout the full product development lifecycle; from reviewing requirements and shaping product features to architecting, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting software solutions. You will work closely with designers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, firmware engineers, project managers, and clients to create stable, maintainable applications and connected-product experiences.

We support our team with strong benefits, including a zero-deductible health plan, meaningful retirement match, and employee ownership, so you can focus on doing great work and growing your career.

What You Will Do

  • Review product requirements, develop project estimates, and break complex work into manageable tasks
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain stable, scalable software solutions
  • Design and implement cloud-based web applications, web services, and IoT solutions
  • Collaborate with clients to define product features, clarify technical requirements, and architect effective solutions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software issues throughout development and after deployment
  • Participate in software architecture decisions and technical design discussions
  • Work within collaborative, Agile development teams
  • Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, continuous integration, and other software quality practices
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Continuously expand your skills through varied project work, emerging technologies, and shared learning

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Five or more years of professional experience designing, developing, testing, and debugging web-based software solutions
  • Strong software development fundamentals
  • Professional experience with Java, Python, or C#
  • Experience developing RESTful or SOAP web services
  • Experience deploying and managing web applications or services using AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Experience working on software projects using Agile development methodologies
  • Proficiency with source control and development tools such as Git, continuous integration platforms, and automated testing frameworks
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and technical communication skills
  • Ability to organize work, manage changing priorities, and maintain attention to both system-level goals and important technical details

Nice to Have

  • Experience architecting software systems
  • Experience leading software development projects or technical teams
  • Experience developing software for connected products or IoT applications
  • Experience collaborating with firmware, electrical, mechanical, or industrial design teams
  • Experience working directly with clients to shape product requirements and technical solutions
  • Experience contributing to software development standards, processes, or engineering best practices

Why i3

At i3, Software Engineers do not work in isolation. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, interact directly with clients, and see your work move from early concept through launch.

We embrace new technologies and look for meaningful ways to apply them to real product challenges. We value curiosity, accountability, thoughtful communication, and people who care about both technical excellence and team success.

If you are energized by varied challenges, collaborative problem-solving, and the opportunity to create products that make a real impact, you will feel at home at i3.
