Tax Compliance Specialist

Job Summary

Next Generation, Inc., an HR-Path company, is seeking a highly detail-oriented Tax Compliance Specialist to support federal, state, and local tax compliance activities. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on tax filings, tax remittances, agency registrations, reconciliations, and resolution of tax notices.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience preparing and filing tax returns, remitting taxes to agencies, researching and resolving tax issues, maintaining tax accounts, and working directly within state and local tax portals. This role is not a management position and does not include payroll processing responsibilities. We are seeking a tax professional who is comfortable performing day-to-day compliance activities and ensuring filings are completed accurately and on time.

Candidates local to Atlanta who can work in the office occasionally are preferred, but remote candidates will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review, and file federal, state, and local tax returns accurately and on time.
  • Process tax payments and remittances through agency websites and electronic filing systems.
  • Perform manual tax filings when required by federal, state, or local tax agencies.
  • Pull, validate, and analyze tax data from internal systems to support filing and compliance activities.
  • Reconcile tax liabilities, payments, filings, and agency balances.
  • Research and resolve tax notices, inquiries, discrepancies, and agency correspondence.
  • Maintain tax filing calendars and ensure compliance with all filing deadlines.
  • Update and maintain tax rates, filing frequencies, account information, and agency records.
  • Register businesses with federal, state, and local tax agencies as needed.
  • Work directly with tax agency portals to manage filings, payments, and account maintenance.
  • Review source data and supporting documentation to ensure filing accuracy.
  • Document tax processes and recommend efficiency improvements where appropriate.
  • Support audits and provide requested tax documentation when needed.
  • Maintain detailed compliance records and tax filing documentation.

Required Qualifications
  • 3-5+ years of hands-on federal, state, and local tax compliance experience.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and filing tax returns.
  • Experience processing tax remittances and payments through agency websites and tax portals.
  • Experience performing manual tax filings in addition to automated filing processes.
  • Strong experience researching and resolving tax notices and agency correspondence.
  • Experience reconciling tax liabilities, payments, filings, and balances.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple filing deadlines and priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with tax compliance software and electronic filing platforms.
  • Experience registering entities with federal, state, and local tax agencies.
  • Experience supporting multi-state tax compliance.
  • SAP experience preferred.
