Remote Field Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Field Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Field Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and system installation, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with remote diagnostic tools, field service management software, and industry-specific equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for working independently and supporting clients from a distance. These abilities are crucial for delivering timely technical solutions, maintaining customer satisfaction, and ensuring operational efficiency in remote environments.

How does a Remote Field Engineer effectively coordinate with on-site teams and clients while working off-site?

As a Remote Field Engineer, clear communication is essential since you are not physically present on the job site. Most companies rely on video conferencing, project management tools, and real-time reporting platforms to keep remote engineers in the loop. You'll often schedule regular check-ins with on-site teams, review digital documentation, and provide technical guidance remotely. Building strong relationships with both on-site staff and clients helps ensure issues are addressed quickly and projects stay on track. Being proactive and responsive to messages or calls is key to maintaining trust and efficiency in this remote collaboration model.

What is a Remote Field Engineer?

A Remote Field Engineer is a technical professional who provides engineering support, troubleshooting, and maintenance for equipment or systems, often from a remote location rather than on-site. They use digital tools and communication technologies to diagnose issues, guide repairs, and ensure the smooth operation of machinery or infrastructure. Remote Field Engineers can work in various industries, such as telecommunications, energy, or IT, and may occasionally travel to client sites if necessary. Their role helps minimize downtime and supports clients or teams in locations where specialized technical expertise is needed but not always physically present.

• Develop and execute strategic account plans to grow new and existing business
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor, translating customer workflows into tailored liquid handling solutions
• Conduct product demonstrations and workflow-based presentations for scientific and procurement stakeholders
• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, including researchers, lab managers, and procurement teams
• Maintain accurate forecasting and CRM data to support business planning
• Support installations, training, and ongoing customer adoption of Tecan solutions
• Partner with Service, Applications, and Technical Support teams to ensure customer satisfaction
• Participate in regional and national trade shows, conferences, and customer events
• Identify and communicate market trends, competitive activity, and new application opportunities
• Collaborate with internal teams to resolve customer issues and ensure long-term account success
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory, company, and safety requirements
• Travel within the assigned territory as required, up to 50% overnight travel, including short-notice travel when necessary

What You Bring

• Strong ability to manage and grow a technical sales territory in a capital equipment environment
• Deep understanding of consultative and solution-based selling approaches
• Excellent communication skills with ability to present technical and non-technical concepts clearly
• Strong presentation and customer-facing skills with scientific and procurement audiences
• Proven ability to manage complex sales cycles and multiple stakeholders
• Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
• Ability to work independently in a remote, field-based role
• High level of adaptability, initiative, and problem-solving ability
• Strong collaboration skills with internal teams and external partners
• Ability to work well under pressure and manage competing priorities

Your Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences or related field required
• 3+ years of sales experience in capital equipment within the life sciences industry
• Experience with liquid handling systems, laboratory automation, or microplate instrumentation strongly preferred

• Strong proficiency with CRM systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regularly

Nice to Have

• Experience in laboratory automation or high-throughput screening environments
• Familiarity with academic, biotech, or government research markets
• Experience supporting product demonstrations and on-site customer training
• Background working with procurement and institutional purchasing processes
• Experience with trade shows, scientific conferences, or field marketing support
• Strong analytical or data-driven sales forecasting skills

What We Offer

• Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
• 401(k) employer match on first 6% contributions (no vesting period)
• Company-paid Life Insurance
• HSA & HRA options
• Short- and Long-Term Disability coverage
