How much do remote fiber optics certification jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote fiber optics certification in the United States is $27.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.63 and $31.49 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals pursuing remote fiber optics certification roles?

Professionals in remote fiber optics certification roles often encounter challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams to verify installations, troubleshooting connectivity issues without direct physical access, and keeping up with evolving industry standards. Effective communication and strong technical documentation skills are critical for ensuring accurate assessments and certifications from a distance. Additionally, staying current with new technologies and maintaining certifications can help you stand out and advance in this rapidly changing field.

What are remote fiber optics certifications?

Remote fiber optics certifications are professional credentials that verify an individual's knowledge and skills in installing, testing, and maintaining fiber optic systems, often through online or distance learning programs. These certifications are designed for technicians and engineers who work with fiber optic cables in telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. Completing a remote certification typically involves online coursework, virtual labs, and sometimes remote proctored exams, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for learners worldwide.

What is the difference between Remote Fiber Optics Certification vs Fiber Optic Technician?

AspectRemote Fiber Optics CertificationFiber Optic Technician
CredentialsCertification in fiber optics, remote installation, and testingTypically requires technical training, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentRemote, office-based or field supervisionOn-site installation, maintenance, and repair
Industry UsageUsed for remote roles, project management, and oversightHands-on installation and troubleshooting

The Remote Fiber Optics Certification focuses on remote management, testing, and oversight of fiber optic systems, often involving remote diagnostics and supervision. In contrast, Fiber Optic Technicians perform physical installation, maintenance, and repair work on-site. Both roles require technical knowledge, but the certification emphasizes remote skills, making it ideal for supervisory or planning positions in the fiber optics industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fiber Optics Technician working remotely, and why are they important?

To succeed as a remote Fiber Optics Technician, you need a solid understanding of fiber optic theory, installation, splicing, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a recognized fiber optics certification such as FOA CFOT or ETA certification. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like OTDRs, fusion splicers, and network testing equipment is essential, as well as experience with remote collaboration platforms. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for diagnosing issues and coordinating with off-site teams. These competencies ensure efficient, high-quality network installations and maintenance, minimizing downtime and ensuring client satisfaction in a remote work environment.

Job description

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Optical Engineer/System Architect to lead the design, development, and testing of advanced free-space optical (FSO) communication systems leverage novel optical technology. The position requires work at the intersection of photonics, laser systems, and space/airborne communications to build next-generation terminals for terrestrial, airborne, and space-based platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead AOA and conceptual design of laser communication terminals and subsystems, including optical benches, beam steering modules, and acquisition/tracking mechanisms.
  • Develop link budgets, simulate end-to-end optical communication performance, and optimize for SWaP-C constraints.
  • Derive requirements for component selection, integration, and system-level validation (e.g., lasers, modulators, beam expanders, fiber optics).
  • Collaborate with electrical, RF, mechanical, and software external teams to integrate optical comm systems into airborne or space-qualified platforms.
  • Support optical alignment, calibration, and test (including pointing, tracking, and acquisition) in lab and field settings.
  • Engage in customer briefings, system requirement definition, and roadmap planning for optical comm architectures.
  • Author technical documents, system specs, and support IP and proposal development.

Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in EO/IR systems engineering, free-space optical communication, or directed energy systems.
  • Hands-on expertise in laser systems, optical alignment, and fiber-coupled systems.
  • Familiarity with optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, Code V, FRED) and MATLAB/Python.
  • Experience with optical communication protocols and pointing/tracking systems for free space optical communication or other applications.
  • Understanding optical link impairments, turbulence effects, and acquisition/tracking strategies.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with space-qualified optical systems or flight hardware.
  • Knowledge of standards like CCSDS or optical inter-satellite link (OISL) protocols.
  • Familiarity with SWIR/MWIR optics, MEMS beam steering, or Risley prisms.
  • Background in secure communications, encryption, or waveform design.
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation and equity packages
  • Technical leadership in a rapidly advancing application space
  • A collaborative, multidisciplinary team working on next-gen optical communications
  • Opportunities for technical growth, system-level ownership, and leadership
  • Flexible work environment with strong emphasis on innovation and impact
