Remote Experimental Physicist information

How do remote experimental physicists collaborate effectively with laboratory teams and manage hands-on experiments from a distance?

Remote experimental physicists often use advanced digital tools, such as remote lab interfaces, video conferencing, and cloud-based data analysis platforms, to actively participate in experiments and collaborate with on-site teams. Clear communication and well-documented procedures are essential to ensure experiments run smoothly despite the physical distance. Regular virtual meetings, detailed experiment protocols, and real-time data sharing help maintain alignment with laboratory staff. While physical presence may occasionally be required for critical setup or troubleshooting, most tasks can be managed remotely with proper planning and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote experimental physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Experimental Physicist, you need a robust background in physics, data analysis, and experimental design, typically supported by an advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.S.) in physics or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, remote instrumentation control systems, and data processing tools such as Python or MATLAB is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel in remote collaborations and troubleshooting. These skills ensure the accurate execution of experiments, reliable data interpretation, and seamless teamwork despite physical distance.

The main difference between a Remote Experimental Physicist and a Remote Data Scientist lies in their focus and industry application. Experimental Physicists primarily work on scientific research and experiments in labs or academic settings, often requiring advanced physics degrees. Data Scientists analyze data to inform business decisions across various industries, typically with backgrounds in statistics or computer science. Both roles can be remote, but their core responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

What is a remote experimental physicist?

A Remote Experimental Physicist is a scientist who designs, conducts, and analyzes physical experiments, often working from a location outside of a traditional laboratory setting. They use advanced technology and remote access tools to control equipment, collect data, and collaborate with research teams online. This role allows for flexibility and can involve working on experiments in fields like quantum mechanics, materials science, or particle physics, often partnering with institutions or laboratories worldwide. Remote Experimental Physicists must have strong problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and the ability to adapt to virtual work environments.

Job description

The Team:

Upstart's Unsecured Underwriting Machine Learning team develops and improves the models that inform credit decisions for our unsecured lending products. The team conducts machine learning research, evaluates model performance, and partners closely with engineering teams to translate promising ideas into scalable  model improvements.

As an Applied Scientist, you will research and implement enhancements to Upstart's core unsecured underwriting model. Your work will directly influence credit decisioning and help the team increase the pace of research while maintaining the rigor, reliability, and responsible oversight required of production underwriting models.

As an Applied Scientist in the Unsecured Underwriting Machine Learning team at Upstart, you will:

  • Research machine learning and statistical approaches that improve the predictive performance of unsecured underwriting models.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate model enhancements using rigorous experimentation and validation methods.
  • Analyze model performance and downstream effects to confirm that proposed changes improve decisioning reliably.
  • Partner with various engineering teams to support technical reviews, implementation, and deployment.
  • Translate research findings into clear recommendations, documented methodologies, and production-ready solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, physics, econometrics, operations research, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
  • 0-2 years of experience conducting machine learning, statistical modeling, or applied quantitative research in an academic or industry setting.
  • Experience developing and evaluating machine learning or statistical models using Python.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of probability, statistics, and machine learning methods.
  • Experience designing experiments or validation analyses to assess model accuracy, reliability, or predictive performance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a quantitative field.
  • Knowledge of supervised learning, model evaluation, and feature engineering techniques.
  • Experience working with large or complex datasets and translating research concepts into implemented solutions.
  • Ability to balance research velocity with analytical rigor, model reliability, and responsible decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S or Canada (outside of Quebec) but are expected to spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites and in-person meetings. The onsite cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

What you'll love:

  • Competitive Compensation (base + bonus & equity)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with Health Savings Account contributions from Upstart
  • 401(k) with 100% company match up to $4,500 and immediate vesting and after-tax savings
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Generous holiday, vacation, sick and safety leave
  • Supportive parental, family care, and military leave programs
  • Annual wellness, technology & ergonomic reimbursement programs
