Remote Experimental Physicist information

What is a remote experimental physicist?

A Remote Experimental Physicist is a scientist who designs, conducts, and analyzes physical experiments, often working from a location outside of a traditional laboratory setting. They use advanced technology and remote access tools to control equipment, collect data, and collaborate with research teams online. This role allows for flexibility and can involve working on experiments in fields like quantum mechanics, materials science, or particle physics, often partnering with institutions or laboratories worldwide. Remote Experimental Physicists must have strong problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and the ability to adapt to virtual work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote experimental physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Experimental Physicist, you need a robust background in physics, data analysis, and experimental design, typically supported by an advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.S.) in physics or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, remote instrumentation control systems, and data processing tools such as Python or MATLAB is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel in remote collaborations and troubleshooting. These skills ensure the accurate execution of experiments, reliable data interpretation, and seamless teamwork despite physical distance.

How do remote experimental physicists collaborate effectively with laboratory teams and manage hands-on experiments from a distance?

Remote experimental physicists often use advanced digital tools, such as remote lab interfaces, video conferencing, and cloud-based data analysis platforms, to actively participate in experiments and collaborate with on-site teams. Clear communication and well-documented procedures are essential to ensure experiments run smoothly despite the physical distance. Regular virtual meetings, detailed experiment protocols, and real-time data sharing help maintain alignment with laboratory staff. While physical presence may occasionally be required for critical setup or troubleshooting, most tasks can be managed remotely with proper planning and support.

What is the difference between Remote Experimental Physicist vs Remote Data Scientist?

As a Staff Data Analyst at Upstart, you will own the monitoring and reporting of model and credit performance for Personal Loans. This role provides regular visibility to senior leadership and plays a key role in shaping data-driven decisions at the highest levels of the organization.

In addition to owning recurring reporting and performance tracking, this role requires strong analytical curiosity and investigative rigor. You will proactively monitor portfolio and model performance, identify emerging trends, diagnose unexpected outcomes, and ultimately recommend actionable treatments. This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys going beyond standard reporting to conduct deep analytical investigations and drive meaningful business impact.

How you'll make an impact

  • Own credit and performance monitoring for the Personal Loans product
  • Identify performance trends and go deeper to understand root causes and recommend targeted treatments
  • Perform rigorous statistical analyses to evaluate past experiments and natural experiments
  • Build and maintain workflows that automate and scale standard reporting

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, or related field)
  • Experience with Python and SQL
  • Strong analytical and first-principles thinking, with the ability to tackle complex and ambiguous problems
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills; especially with the ability to clearly articulate complex analytical concepts to diverse audiences
  • 6+ years of  experience in analytics, data science, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, or related)
  • Experience and familiarity with finance, especially as it related to lending

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time zone requirements The team operates on time zones ranging from EST to PST.

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely.
