    Job description

Sentinel Blue is looking for an Automation Engineer to join our Platforms Team. This role is ideal for someone who sees repeatable manual work as a problem to be solved with code, and who enjoys connecting systems together to eliminate friction across engineering, operations, and service delivery. Our ideal candidate is a pragmatic builder who can design clean integrations between APIs, write reliable automation, and reason through identity, authentication, and workflow concerns end-to-end. This role will support our internal teams and clients by building and maintaining the automation, integrations, and tooling that keep our platforms efficient, consistent, and scalable.
This is a full-time position that is fully remote.
This position may require access to technology, technical data, or information that is subject to U.S. export control laws and regulations. Employment in this position is contingent upon either verification of U.S. person status as defined under applicable export control regulations (which includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain protected individuals such as refugees and asylees) or the ability to obtain any required export authorization. The company reserves the right not to apply for an export license and to decline to proceed with any applicant on that basis. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to citizenship status, national origin, or immigration status.
A day in the Automation Engineer role: The Automation Engineer may design API-driven integrations between SaaS platforms, write scripts and tooling to automate provisioning and lifecycle tasks, build and maintain workflow automations, and contribute infrastructure-as-code that supports repeatable deployments. They will focus on reducing operational toil, removing manual handoffs, and creating reusable automation components that internal teams can rely on.
The Automation Engineer will work closely with Operations, Security, and Service Delivery teams to understand pain points, identify automation opportunities, and deliver solutions that integrate cleanly into existing workflows. They will participate in design discussions, contribute to technical standards, and continuously improve the reliability and observability of automation systems. The role provides opportunities to work with modern API platforms, identity systems, workflow engines, and IaC tooling, while growing into senior platform engineering or automation architecture roles.
    Responsibilities:
    • Design, build, and maintain automation that integrates SaaS platforms, internal tools, and cloud services across client and internal environments.
    • Develop and consume REST APIs, including OAuth2 authentication flows, token lifecycle management, and error handling for production-grade integrations.
    • Write scripts and tooling in PowerShell, Python, and other appropriate languages to automate provisioning, configuration, reporting, and lifecycle tasks.
    • Build infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or similar frameworks to support repeatable, version-controlled deployments.
    • Partner with internal teams to identify manual workflows, scope automation opportunities, and deliver solutions that fit how those teams actually work.
    • Implement automation with appropriate guardrails, including secrets management, least-privilege access, logging, and observability.
    • Maintain and improve existing automations, including refactoring, documentation, and migration of brittle workflows to more reliable patterns.
    • Communicate automation designs, integration patterns, and operational guidance clearly to internal teams and stakeholders.
    • Contribute to platform documentation, standards, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
    • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and enhance the operator and engineer experience through automation.

    What We Can Offer:
Sentinel Blue is a young company with a focused mission: We're bringing enterprise-class cybersecurity to small and medium sized businesses. Frankly, we're pushing the envelope of how things are done and constantly seeking innovative ways to meet that mission. The pace is fast, and we're always learning new things. This is a great place if you want to expose yourself to new and emerging technologies, want to be challenged, and want to build your skills. Further, success in this role can quickly transition into senior platform engineering or automation architecture opportunities. The right person will find themselves in a fun, dynamic environment, working on interesting problems and making a real difference.
You will be required to achieve a Security+ certification in the first 2 months of hire; we'll cover your certification costs and provide paid time for you to study!
    Requirements:
    • U.S. citizenship - by nature of our work with the defense industry, all employees must be eligible for a Secret clearance.
    • 2+ years of experience in automation engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, software engineering, or related technical roles.
    • Hands-on experience designing and consuming REST APIs in production, including pagination, rate limiting, retries, and error handling.
    • Practical understanding of OAuth2 flows (authorization code, client credentials, PKCE) and modern authentication patterns including token lifecycle and refresh handling.
    • Proficiency scripting in PowerShell, Python, or comparable languages, with the judgment to choose the right tool for the job.
    • Practical experience with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or equivalent frameworks.
    • Strong understanding of how automation interacts with identity, secrets, and access control, and how to build automation that doesn't introduce security risk.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams, translate operational pain points into automation requirements, and deliver solutions that get adopted.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain integration designs and trade-offs to non-engineering stakeholders.
    • CompTIA Security+ certification is required in the first 6 months of hire.

    Desired Qualifications:
    • Experience building or operating multi-tenant applications, particularly in Microsoft Entra ID environments (app registrations, service principals, admin consent flows).
    • Experience with CICD platforms such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent.
    • Hands-on experience with workflow automation platforms such as n8n, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate, or similar.
    • Familiarity with Azure, Azure Government, and Office 365 GCC High environments.
    • Working knowledge of a security and compliance framework such as NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, NIST 800-171, CMMC, CIS Controls, ISO 27001, or SOC 2.
    • Experience working in a multi-tenant or managed services environment.
    • Exposure to message queues, event-driven architectures, or webhook-based integration patterns.
    • Strong interest in reducing operational toil through code.
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or equivalent work experience.

    Benefits:
    • Fully paid individual healthcare, vision and dental insurance for the employee.
    • Paid certification and training opportunities.
    • Three weeks of paid vacation + 10 paid holidays.
    • A supportive environment with a focus on keeping healthy work-life balance.
    • Retirement benefit (401k) with company match.
