Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Spanish-to-English Translator to provide accurate, high-quality translation services for technical, legal, engineering, scientific, environmental, and water-resource management documents. The selected individual will support a federal contractor government program involving cross-border infrastructure, environmental compliance, water management, engineering projects, scientific reports, presentations, and official correspondence.

The translator will be responsible for translating approximately 32,200 words per month, with the majority of work consisting of Spanish-to-English translation. Assignments may include technical reports, engineering documentation, legal correspondence, environmental studies, PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets, news articles, and other official government documents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate complex legal, technical, engineering, scientific, and environmental documents from Spanish to English while preserving accuracy, meaning, tone, and technical terminology.
  • Perform limited English-to-Spanish translations as required.
  • Review, edit, and proofread translated materials to ensure linguistic and technical accuracy.
  • Format translated documents to match original layouts, including tables, charts, graphics, and presentations.
  • Maintain translation memory databases, glossaries, and terminology resources.
  • Utilize MemoQ and machine translation tools in accordance with client requirements.
  • Track assignments, maintain translation logs, update spreadsheets, and distribute completed translations electronically.
  • Participate in virtual meetings and collaborate with project stakeholders during normal U.S. business hours.
  • Meet accelerated turnaround requirements during periodic workload surges.
  • Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive government documents.

Required Qualifications

  • Native or Subject-Matter-Expertย in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated experience translating complex legal, technical, engineering, scientific, or environmental documents from Spanish to English.
  • Strong knowledge of technical terminology related to water resources, environmental management, infrastructure, engineering, wastewater treatment, public works, or related fields.
  • Experience using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, preferably MemoQ.
  • Ability to provide translation samples demonstrating technical Spanish-to-English translation competency.
  • Excellent proofreading, editing, and quality assurance skills.
  • Strong communication, organization and document management abilities.
  • Ability to successfully complete a U.S. Government Non-Sensitive Public Trust background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous translation experience supporting federal, state, or local government agencies of at least 3 years.
  • American Translator Association (ATA) Certification or other recognized translation certifications.
  • Familiarity with translation memory systems, terminology management, and machine translation technologies.

Workload & Expectations

  • Approximately 32,200 translated words per month.
  • Contractual Part-Time position
  • Workload may include periodic surges requiring expedited completion within 24 hours.
  • Approximately 90%+ Spanish-to-English translation and less than 10% English-to-Spanish translation.
  • Additional responsibilities include document tracking, coordination, formatting, translation memory maintenance, and administrative support related to translation activities.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task.

Work Environment

  • Remote position.
  • Must be available during normal (U.S.) Mountain Time Zone business hours.
