What is a remote EDA software engineer?

A Remote EDA Software Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software tools, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. EDA software is critical for designing and verifying integrated circuits and electronic systems. Remote EDA Software Engineers collaborate with hardware engineers, participate in code reviews, and contribute to software solutions using programming languages like C++, Python, or Java. Their work supports the creation of faster, smaller, and more efficient electronic devices. Remote roles often require strong communication skills and proficiency with online collaboration tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote EDA software engineer?

To thrive as a Remote EDA Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, Python, or Java), a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures, and a background in electronic design automation or electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools (like Synopsys, Cadence, or Mentor Graphics), version control systems, and relevant certifications can be highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills, especially for collaborating across distributed teams. Mastering these skills ensures the development of efficient, reliable EDA solutions while maintaining productivity and cohesion in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote EDA software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote EDA Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as effective collaboration with globally distributed teams and maintaining clear communication across time zones. Since EDA projects typically involve complex problem-solving and integration with hardware teams, staying aligned through regular video meetings, detailed documentation, and using collaborative development tools is key. Additionally, keeping up with evolving EDA tools and technologies requires continuous learning, which can be managed by participating in online training and industry forums. Proactive communication and self-motivation are crucial for thriving in this remote role.

Job description

Location: United States | Remote
Summary
The Software Engineer is a key member of Abax Health's newly established U.S.-based development team. A core part of this role is helping transfer knowledge, development responsibility, and technical ownership of the AbaxOne platform from our existing Macedonian offshore development team to the new U.S.-based team, while continuing to build new products and capabilities.
This is a hands-on engineering role spanning frontend, backend, APIs, databases, cloud technologies, and integrations. We do not expect expertise in every layer. We do expect strong engineers who can understand systems, learn quickly, go deep when needed, and take ownership of problems through resolution.
This is also a different kind of software engineering role. We want engineers spending more of their time understanding business problems, designing solutions, experimenting, and applying engineering judgment-and less time on repetitive production work. AI-assisted development is a core part of how we work, helping accelerate coding, testing, implementation, debugging, documentation, and maintenance while the engineer remains accountable for the quality and correctness of the solution.
Our current architecture is primarily .NET, but .NET is our existing architecture, not our hiring philosophy. We value engineering judgment, problem solving, adaptability, and strong fundamentals over deep expertise or allegiance to any particular language, framework, or technology-and we are open to evolving our stack as better solutions emerge.
This is not a people-management role. Senior Software Engineers lead through initiative, technical judgment, collaboration, and ownership.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain production software across the application stack.
  • Develop new capabilities while supporting and modernizing AbaxOne.
  • Build deep knowledge of AbaxOne architecture, workflows, integrations, and dependencies as knowledge and development responsibility transition to the U.S.-based team.
  • Help establish durable internal technical ownership and continuity for the AbaxOne platform.
  • Spend significant time understanding business problems, exploring solutions, experimenting, and applying engineering judgment before and during implementation.
  • Diagnose application defects, integration failures, data issues, performance problems, and production incidents.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and implement durable solutions.
  • Make practical technical decisions that balance speed, scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Identify technical debt, risks, and opportunities to simplify or improve the platform.
  • Contribute to strong practices for testing, code review, documentation, deployment, security, and production readiness.
  • Use and help develop AI-assisted engineering approaches that accelerate development, implementation, testing, debugging, and maintenance while remaining accountable for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Partner closely with fellow engineers, Product, QA, Data, Implementation, Infrastructure, Security, Support, and business stakeholders.
  • Take ownership of problems and initiatives from analysis through production.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Strong software engineering experience building and supporting production applications.
  • Experience across multiple areas of a modern application stack, including backend, frontend, APIs, relational databases, integrations, or cloud technologies.
  • Strong system-design, troubleshooting, debugging, and root-cause-analysis skills.
  • Experience with SQL, APIs, automated testing, source control, code review, and CI/CD.
  • Experience with modern cloud environments; Microsoft Azure is preferred.
  • Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar technologies and systems.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools with appropriate technical judgment and validation.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, initiative, and ownership.
  • Experience with .NET/C#, healthcare technology, HL7/FHIR, EHR integrations, or HIPAA-regulated environments is valuable but not required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
• Remote, U.S. based position.
• Requires reliable high speed internet and a private, quiet, and focused workspace that protects patient confidentiality.
• Prolonged sitting while working at a computer and using a telephone or headset.
• Clear, professional communication with patients, providers, and colleagues in every interaction.
• Occasional availability outside of scheduled hours may be required based on business needs.
Benefits
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Benefits Offered:
Employer sponsored Medical, Dental & Vision
HSA Employer Contributions, Employer Paid Life, Short-term and Long-term Disability, and AD&D Insurance Plans
Flexible Time Off Plan & Paid Holidays
Employee Referral Bonus
