The Director, Payer Technology Optum Advisory - Remote is a leader within the Systems & Application pillar of the Payer Technology consulting practice.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.
For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Serve in delivery leadership and/or business solution architect roles on complex consulting engagements
  • Lead matrixed client and consulting teams across complex engagements, including coordination across business, technology, operations, and executive stakeholders
  • Leverage AI-enabled solutions to strengthen client solutioning, delivery execution, insight generation, practice innovation, and reusable capability development
  • Document the detailed "how" for moving a consulting scope of work from intent to completion, including definition of the end state across people, processes, and systems; future-state process flows; manual touchpoints; enabling tools; and technical reference architecture.
  • Diagnose client-identified and underlying business, operational, and technology issues; define practical, strategic solutions that address root causes and measurable client outcomes
  • Build alignment and consensus among client stakeholders to support solution adoption, implementation readiness, and sustained value realization
  • Work independently to produce high-quality client deliverables and materials, including solution intent documents, process diagrams, project plans, slide presentations, and proposals
  • Coach and develop consulting team members by guiding workstream approaches, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring outputs are accurate, high-quality, and actionable
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for client project leadership, establishing effective communication cadences and delivering clear, accurate, executive-ready updates, written deliverables, verbal briefings, and client presentations
  • Manage project economics, quality standards, and delivery practices to support profitable, high-value client outcomes
  • Demonstrate solid relationship management, sound judgment, and effective navigation of complex interpersonal and stakeholder dynamics
  • Contribute to practice advancement through business development, thought leadership, reusable assets, and subject matter expertise across Optum Advisory Services

Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in management consulting with a focus on healthcare payer business
  • 5+ years of Healthcare payer experience with expert-level knowledge of at least one of the following domains: claims, provider, finance, enrollment & eligibility, billing, utilization management
  • 5+ years of experience leading large-scale consulting engagements or large internal healthcare projects / programs in a client facing role. Includes proven experience to guide a team on how to get started
  • 3+ years of experience in Agile development methodology, including Capability Management and Program Increment Planning
  • 3+ years of experience presenting to clients and senior executive level audiences
  • Proven experience working on a least two large scale core admin system implementations or migrations
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools (e.g., generative AI, automation tools, or advanced analytics platforms) to enhance productivity and deliverables
  • Proven experience in developing consulting business expansion by identifying additional client needs that translate to opportunities and sales
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite - Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio
  • Proficient with MS Copilot
  • Proven ability to guide teams on effective and responsible use of AI tools, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and delivery best practices
  • Willing or ability to travel domestically, up to 25%

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified agile practitioner or scrum master with Proven experience in Agile development methodology, including Capability Management and Program Increment Planning
  • Proven business development experience with ability to identify opportunities, frame the solution and approach in a team based selling environment
  • Experience in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience leading in a large matrixed, global environment

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $134,600 - $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
