Aquinas Consulting is currently looking to fill a hybrid/remote Director of AI Engineering job in Bethesda, MD with a key client in the Hospitality Space. If you have eight or more years of software engineering experience and a strong background in AI/ML applications and enterprise integrations, this CONTRACT opportunity could be a great fit for you. In this role, you will serve as the AI Technology Lead for agile teams within a business vertical, leading and advising those teams while driving high-priority use cases from discovery through production. You will design and build AI agents, multi-agent workflows, and enterprise integrations across some of the most complex and high-visibility engagements in the AI program.
Director, AI Engineering Job Responsibilities:
- Lead and advise agile teams as the AI Technology Lead, operating concurrently across Build, Consult, Advise, and Monitor engagement modes
- Design and build AI agents, multi-agent workflows, and enterprise integrations using vendor SDKs including AWS, Watsonx, Writer, and Copilot Studio
- Coordinate with vendor engineering teams on joint delivery, providing architectural direction and quality oversight
- Produce governance artifacts and make architectural decisions that set precedent across the broader AI program
- Build comprehensive handoff packages including runbooks, monitoring documentation, and reference architectures to enable long-term ownership by business partners
- Mentor engineers and contribute proven patterns, SDKs, and reference architectures to the shared pattern library after each Build cycle
Qualifications:
- Eight plus years of software engineering experience with three or more years in AI/ML applications, enterprise integrations, or platform engineering; or six plus years with a Master's degree
- Deep proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript writing production-quality code
- Hands-on experience with LLM application development including agent building, prompt engineering, and AI workflow automation
- Experience designing REST API integrations and producing technical and architectural documentation in enterprise environments
- Proficiency using AI-powered coding assistants such as Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code as everyday development tools
- Experience with two or more enterprise AI platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP/Vertex AI, Watsonx, or Copilot Studio preferred
- Hands-on experience building production-grade RAG pipelines and multi-agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or CrewAI preferred
