Sr. Director & Actuary - AM06AEDirector & Actuary - AM06BE

The position is part of the Middle & Large Property actuarial team which provides support for ~$1.0B of property and inland marine business for The Hartford's Middle & Large Business segment. Operating in a dynamic market, the team focuses on driving profitable growth through disciplined pricing, performance monitoring, and data-driven insights to support underwriting and product strategy.


This role reports to the Middle & Large Property Actuarial AVP and will partner closely with the Middle & Large Property Product and Underwriting teams, and other key stakeholders across the organization. The candidate will lead a team that is focused on monitoring and evaluating loss ratio and portfolio performance across property lines, providing thought partnership and analytical leadership.
This individual will manage a staff of two individuals. The ideal candidate is results driven with a commitment to meeting deadlines. They will attend to detail and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. A strong technical background is required with strong leadership skills and the ability to influence.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Own loss ratio planning for property and marine lines, including assumption setting through analysis of historical loss ratios, the current loss cost environment, and the competitive landscape. Clearly articulate drivers to leadership and cross-functional partners.

  • Coordinate catastrophe risk budgeting across property lines, partnering with ERM and across actuarial to align methodologies, exhibits, and commentary

  • Oversee regular monitoring of loss and premium trends, AOI, and other book management activities, and provide actionable insights to partners and improve loss ratio performance.

  • Partner with reinsurance team to evaluate and support reinsurance treaties as needed

  • Develop and enhance financial, pricing, and book management materials for quarterly leadership meetings, in collaboration with partners across actuarial, product, and ERM.

  • Lead ad hoc and emerging-risk analyses, recommend pricing strategies, and communicate to cross-functional stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics, actuarial science, or related field of study.

  • FCAS preferred, but open to candidates with appropriate knowledge background.

  • Minimum 5 years of property and casualty insurance actuarial experience; experience with property lines a plus.

  • Knowledge of actuarial pricing techniques

  • Demonstrated technical/analytical skills; High proficiency in Excel required and experience with Python/R/SQL preferred.

  • Effective oral and written communications skills.

  • Independently motivated; constantly looks for areas to add value.

  • Teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with and influence individuals at different organizational levels.

Work Arrangement:

This role can have a Hybrid work schedule out of the Hartford office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Consideration may be given for placement at our Charlotte or Chicago hubs as well as a remote arrangement.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$136,000 - $204,000

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
