What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

We are currently looking for a Front-End (UI/UX) Developer for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will support the development of an AI-powered Patient Health Data Summarization capability within the Joint Longitudinal Viewer (JLV), delivered through a Clinical Decision Support (CDS) widget that provides clinicians with AI-generated insights derived from clinical documentation and health records. The Front-End (UI/UX) Developer will build intuitive, accessible, and responsive user experiences using modern front-end technologies while supporting transparency, source traceability, and usability of AI-generated clinical information.
The developer will work within an Agile, multidisciplinary team alongside Product Owners, UX Designers, clinical subject matter experts, architects, business analysts, test engineers, interoperability teams, and DevSecOps engineers. The role requires close collaboration across technical and clinical teams to deliver production-ready healthcare applications that integrate seamlessly into clinician workflows.
The candidate must reside within the continental US.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop responsive, accessible, and intuitive user interfaces for healthcare applications, including reusable components using modern front-end frameworks and component-based architectures.
  • Develop data-intensive user experiences, visualizations, and workflows that simplify complex clinical information and support clinician decision-making while meeting WCAG and ARIA accessibility standards.
  • Implement user interfaces supporting Clinical Decision Support workflows, including CDS cards, notifications, actionable clinical insights, and patient-context-aware experiences.
  • Integrate front-end applications with backend services and clinical data sources while presenting AI-generated summaries with appropriate transparency, usability, and traceability to source records.
  • Develop and maintain automated unit, integration, and UI tests, participate in code reviews, leverage AI-assisted development tools, and contribute to application quality and usability standards.
  • Collaborate within an Agile environment on sprint planning, backlog refinement, demonstrations, retrospectives, user acceptance testing, production releases, technical documentation, design specifications, and release materials.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, with 5+ years of professional front-end development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and TypeScript, including responsive web design principles.
  • Experience developing modern, component-based web applications using React, Angular, Vue, or a comparable front-end framework.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing accessibility standards and best practices, including WCAG and ARIA, and developing complex, data-intensive user interfaces.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex technical or business requirements into intuitive, user-centered experiences.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with demonstrated experience working effectively within Agile, multidisciplinary software development teams.

Additional Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Veterans Affairs (VA), federal healthcare programs, or healthcare technology environments, including familiarity with clinical workflows and healthcare terminology.
  • Knowledge of healthcare interoperability and Clinical Decision Support standards, including FHIR, C-CDA, CDS Hooks, SMART on FHIR, or related technologies.
  • Experience with healthcare data visualization, human-centered design methodologies, AWS or Azure cloud environments, AI-generated content, or AI-assisted software development tools.
