What Your Job Will Be Like
As an R&D Computer Scientist specializing in High-Performance Computing within a Linux environment, you will play a critical role in optimizing and maintaining our HPC systems. You will work closely with researchers and engineers to ensure that our computing resources are utilized efficiently and effectively. Your expertise will help drive performance improvements and support complex computational tasks.
This is a unique opportunity to partner with researchers and vendors to explore and influence technical directions and drive transformation in how scientific and national security applications utilize computing in the coming decade and beyond.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and optimize HPC systems and workflows to enhance performance and efficiency
  • Analyze systems¿ monitoring data using Python data-science libraries, Grafana dashboards, and machine-learning/visualization techniques to identify trends, anomalies, and actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand computational needs and provide tailored solutions.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to maintain system reliability.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Assist in the deployment and configuration of software applications in the HPC environment.
  • Provide technical support and training to users on HPC resources and best practices.
  • Stay current with advancements in HPC technologies and recommend improvements.

Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).¿
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).¿
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • 5 years of experience with high performance computing (HPC) systems or large scale cloud deployments based on Linux / Unix operating systems
  • Experience managing multiple systems or a variety of system architectures
  • Experience with configuration management technologies such as Ansible or Terraform
  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity).
  • Experience with Python, C, and/or FORTRAN programming languages
  • Strong communication skills and experience working in team environment
  • Experience with continuous deployment/continuous integration workflows.
  • Knowledge of performance profiling and benchmarking tools.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Grafana)
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and services.

About Our Team
The HPC Development Department (9328) partners with different scientific and computing disciplines at Sandia, and externally, to advance high performance computing (HPC) and operations. The Advanced Architecture Platforms are acquired and operated as part of a multi-center collaboration to explore, evaluate, and influence next-generation computing. Team members enjoy exploration of cutting-edge technologies and the ability to drive change in the field of computing.
