We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
The DevSecOps & Automation Engineer supports the design, automation, deployment, and optimization of secure, scalable, and compliant systems across VA programs. This role enables continuous delivery, infrastructure modernization, and operational excellence for mission-critical applications supporting Veterans. The engineer ensures alignment with VA OIT architecture, TRM-approved technologies, federal cybersecurity standards, and ATO requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
DevSecOps Engineering & Automation
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines using VA-approved tools (e.g., Git, Jenkins, Jira, etc)
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning using IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible) within VA-approved cloud environments
  • Integrate automated security scanning, dependency checks, and compliance gates into delivery pipelines
  • Support containerization and orchestration using Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or VA-approved platforms

Cloud & Infrastructure Operations
  • Deploy and manage applications in AWS, Azure, or VA Enterprise Cloud environments
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting using tools such as CloudWatch, ELK, Splunk, Dynatrace, or Prometheus
  • Optimize system performance, reliability, and scalability for high-availability VA systems

Security, Compliance & ATO Support
  • Ensure all systems meet VA cybersecurity, FISMA, NIST 800-53, and Zero Trust requirements
  • Collaborate with ISSOs and security teams to support ATO documentation, vulnerability remediation, and continuous monitoring
  • Implement secure configuration baselines, patching, and compliance automation

Collaboration & Delivery
  • Work closely with developers, QA, product owners, PMs, and VA stakeholders to streamline delivery workflows
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and support iterative delivery across Scrum or SAFe environments
  • Provide technical guidance on DevOps best practices, automation strategies, and cloud adoption

Operational Support & Troubleshooting
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across application, infrastructure, and pipeline layers
  • Support release management, environment configuration, and production deployments
  • Maintain documentation for infrastructure, pipelines, and operational processes
  • Support modernization of legacy VA systems (VistA, VES platforms, VA.gov services) into cloud-native architectures

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of DevOps, cloud engineering, or automation experience
  • Experience supporting federal agencies (VA, DoD, HHS, DHS, etc.)
  • Experience with AWS
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes
  • Hands-on experience with Service mesh console or similar tools
  • Extensive experience with Linux VM's, upgrading and migration experience
  • AWS Dashboard / Monitoring tools - experience with setup and use of Prometheus, Grafana, altermanager, Dynatrace
  • Experience with Jenkins
  • Experience with Argo CD (continuous delivery pipeline)
  • Experience with Maven
  • Experience with Kafka
  • Experience managing Windows Servers
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, IaC, and cloud platforms
  • Strong understanding of federal cybersecurity frameworks and secure DevOps practices
  • Experience with containers, orchestration, and automated testing frameworks
