What Does a Remote Design Engineer Do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

How to make $100,000 a year working from home?

A remote design engineer can reach a $100,000 annual income by gaining specialized skills in high-demand areas such as CAD, UX/UI, or product design, building a strong portfolio, and working for companies that offer competitive salaries or freelance projects. Earning this level often requires experience, a solid understanding of design tools, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.

What is a Remote Design Engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

Can design engineers work remotely?

Design engineers can often work remotely, especially in roles that involve computer-aided design (CAD), simulation, and collaboration tools. Many companies support remote work for design engineers, provided they have the necessary software, hardware, and communication skills to coordinate with teams and clients effectively.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software, aerospace, or petroleum engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. High-level roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or advanced certifications.

How do Remote Design Engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

Job description

Description

Agile Space Industries is a rapidly growing supplier of propulsion hardware and engineering services for the space industry. Headquartered in Durango, Colorado, with expanding operations in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Agile has achieved more than 40% year-over-year growth for the past three years, and our momentum continues to accelerate.

At Agile, we design, build, and test in-space propulsion systems that give spacecraft the ability to maneuver with precision, reliability, and purpose. Our technologies play a critical role in missions that range from lunar landings and resource utilization to national defense, human exploration, and commercial space transport.

We are seeking bold and driven individuals who thrive in a hands-on, fast-moving environment and want to help write the next chapter of space history as part of a close-knit, innovative team.

Agile Space Industries is seeking a remote Mechanical Design Engineer III / IV to support the design, development, and expansion of propulsion test facilities and ground support infrastructure. This role is part of the Propulsion Test Stands and Ground System Engineering (PTSG) team. The Mechanical Design Engineer III / IV is responsible for delivering mechanical designs that enable safe, reliable, and scalable propulsion testing operations.

The position is focused on hands-on mechanical engineering spanning concept development, detailed design, analysis, documentation, vendor integration, installation support, and commissioning. The engineer will work closely with Test Operations, Facilities, Electrical, Controls, and Safety teams to deliver systems that are built, operated, and maintained in active test environments.

This is not a software, quality assurance, or purely analytical role. Successful candidates will be comfortable bridging design intent with field execution and operational realities.

This role can be onsite or remote with up to 25% travel, and we are currently accepting candidates residing in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, Utah, Texas, and Oklahoma. You must live and work from one these states to work remotely for Agile Space Industries.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems supporting propulsion test facilities, including:
  • Test stands and structural assemblies
  • Pressure and vacuum systems
  • Propellant feed systems (hypergolic and cryogenic)
  • Scrubbers, purge systems, cooling systems, and facility utilities
  • Develop mechanical layouts, assemblies, and installation concepts from initial design through commissioning
  • Produce, review, and maintain fabrication drawings, layouts, and as-built documentation
  • Develop and maintain P&IDs in support of mechanical design and system integration
  • Integrate vendor-designed custom equipment into facility and test system designs
  • Review vendor drawings, calculations, and technical submittals for compliance with design intent
  • Perform and oversee first-order mechanical analyses (stress, thermal, flow, fit-up, pressure)
  • Support installation planning, field fit-up, and commissioning activities
  • Provide on-site engineering support during system checkout, troubleshooting, and operational handover
  • Maintain configuration control, revision discipline, and documentation consistency
  • Coordinate closely with Electrical, Controls, Safety, and Test Operations teams
  • Participate in design reviews, readiness reviews, hazard reviews, and operational walkthroughs
  • Mentor junior engineers and support technical knowledge development within the PTSG

Requirements

Leveling Expectations:

Mechanical Design Engineer III

  • Typically, 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Independently executes mechanical designs with limited supervision
  • Owns defined subsystems or portions of larger facility projects
  • Leads vendor coordination and drawing reviews for assigned systems
  • Supports installation and commissioning activities with minimal guidance

Mechanical Design Engineer IV

  • Typically, 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Serve as technical lead for major facility systems or test stand designs
  • Drive system architecture decisions and design

The expected salary range :

Level III: $108,000-$135,000 annually

Level IV: $124,000-$155,000 annually

Final compensation will be based on factors such as experience, skills, and internal equity, and is typically made within the midrange, rather than the upper end.

Work Schedule: Full Time
Employment Type: Exempt
Location: Remote with up to 25% travel. This role can be onsite or remote, and we are currently accepting candidates residing in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, Utah, Texas, and Oklahoma. You MUST live and work from one these states to work remotely for Agile Space Industries.
