Job description

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Senior Biologist to lead and support biological field efforts and permitting activities within our growing Energy Practice. This role focuses on routing, siting, and permitting for renewable and conventional energy projects, including wind, solar, battery energy storage (BESS), transmission lines, substations, and natural gas infrastructure.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, oversee field teams, and support project delivery across the Southwest region.

Location: Remote (Preference: TX, NM, AZ, NV, UT, or Southwest CO)

Essential Job Functions:

Field Leadership & Technical Oversight

  • Lead and manage wildlife and rare plant surveys, including staffing, training, and oversight of junior staff
  • Conduct and support fieldwork across TX, NM, AZ, NV, and UT
  • Perform field surveys requiring extended hours in remote and challenging environments

Permitting & Regulatory Support

  • Support environmental permitting and due diligence for energy projects
  • Prepare and contribute to NEPA documentation, mitigation plans, HCPs, ECPs, EITPs, and ESA-related documentation
  • Research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations to assess permitting requirements and feasibility
  • Represent clients in coordination and negotiations with regulatory agencies

Project & Business Support

  • Provide technical writing support, including reports, peer reviews, and proposals
  • Develop cost estimates and budgets for biological and rare plant survey efforts
  • Support project management, compliance strategies, and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Assist with additional natural resource surveys as needed
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, including biological fieldwork
  • Experience in one or more of the following states: TX, NM, AZ, NV, UT
  • Strong background in:
    • Ecological assessments and environmental impact analysis
    • Habitat conservation planning and biological resource management
    • Environmental permitting for energy projects
  • Experience with wildlife, bat, and avian permitting
  • Experience with BGEPA (eagle take permitting), ECPs, and EITPs
  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with BLM offices in AZ, NV, UT, or NM
  • Experience with USFWS and state-listed species, such as:
    • Mexican spotted owl
    • Cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl
    • Utah prairie dog
    • Mojave desert tortoise
    • Houston toad
  • Experience with Clean Water Act (Sections 401/404)
  • Training in wetland delineation (USACE standards)
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in remote and rugged terrain
  • Ability to hike long distances, including off-trail travel and steep slopes
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to carry field equipment and take detailed field notes

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Remote-based position with frequent travel across the Southwest
  • Fieldwork in challenging outdoor environments, including exposure to heat, cold, and biological hazards

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $100,000-$125,000 annually
