Biologist – Precision Genomics

Job Description

This role supports a high-density genotyping platform within the Precision Genomics Targeted Library Creation team. You will work collaboratively with a large production team to meet daily and weekly genotyping targets under tight deadlines, performing both manual and automated laboratory tasks focused on sample preparation, DNA extraction, and high-throughput workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual DNA extraction, including sample preparation, scooping, and grinding to support high-density genotyping workflows.
  • Prepare samples for Infinium assays for the high-density (HD) laboratory, ensuring accuracy and consistency in all steps.
  • Handle seed and leaf samples for check-in, tracking, and processing to support targeted library creation activities.
  • Execute a variety of manual and automated tasks in setup laboratories to meet daily and weekly genotyping targets.
  • Use laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to check in projects, manage sample data, and maintain accurate records.
  • Run and troubleshoot automated laboratory equipment independently with minimal guidance, ensuring continuous operation of high-throughput workflows.
  • Support shipping and receiving activities related to samples, reagents, and consumables to maintain uninterrupted lab operations.
  • Manage supply inventory, including monitoring stock levels, organizing materials, and coordinating replenishment as needed.
  • Maintain seed storage compliance by following established procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with full-time employees and contractors in a production-focused environment to achieve throughput and quality goals.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality guidelines to ensure reliable and reproducible results.
  • Contribute to a safe and organized laboratory environment by adhering to safety protocols, housekeeping standards, and equipment maintenance practices.
  • Demonstrate consistent reliability and punctuality to support a business-critical laboratory operation running across multiple shifts.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in molecular biology or biology.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience beyond undergraduate coursework, particularly in high-throughput or production environments.
  • Experience with high-throughput sample handling or processing, managing large numbers of samples on a daily basis.
  • Practical experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction and related sample preparation workflows.
  • Ability to run and troubleshoot automated laboratory equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment with tight deadlines and high sample volumes.

Work Environment

The role operates on a Monday through Friday day shift, typically around 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The environment emphasizes reliability, safety, and adherence to standard operating procedures, with a strong focus on meeting tight deadlines and throughput targets. You will be expected to lift up to 40 lbs as part of routine duties and to maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory space while collaborating with a large, multi-shift team.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
