What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Derivatives Operations specialist, and why are they important?

To excel in Remote Derivatives Operations, you need a strong understanding of financial markets, derivatives instruments, and operational risk, typically supported by a degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with trade processing platforms, risk management systems, and industry-standard tools like Bloomberg or Calypso, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., FINRA Series licenses), is valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex transactions and collaborating across teams. These competencies ensure accurate trade settlements, minimize operational risk, and maintain regulatory compliance in a fast-paced, remote environment.

What are Remote Derivatives Operations?

Remote Derivatives Operations refers to the management and processing of financial derivative transactions—such as futures, options, and swaps—from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Professionals in this role ensure the accurate settlement, clearing, confirmation, and reporting of trades, while maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. These roles often involve close collaboration with traders, risk managers, and other stakeholders using digital tools and secure communication platforms. Working remotely in derivatives operations requires strong attention to detail, technical proficiency, and the ability to adapt to evolving financial technology.

What are some of the main challenges faced by professionals in Remote Derivatives Operations, and how can they be addressed?

One of the primary challenges in Remote Derivatives Operations is maintaining clear, real-time communication with global trading desks and back-office teams, which can require working across different time zones. Ensuring accuracy and compliance in trade settlements and reconciliations while operating remotely also demands strong attention to detail and robust digital workflows. To address these challenges, successful professionals leverage advanced collaboration tools, prioritize proactive communication, and stay updated on both regulatory changes and technological advancements. Building strong virtual relationships within the team and with stakeholders is crucial for smooth operations.

Job description

We are looking for a risk manager to join our Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) team. You will be contributing to the building of a fast-growth trading platform with innovative, multi-asset products bridging traditional finance (TradFi) and digital markets. For all roles, we look for people who are passionate about financial market innovation, equipped with energy, act as owners, and have exemplary work ethics.
Responsibilities
  • Cover daily FCM risk management responsibilities, tracking intraday and end-of-day risk metrics across a multi-asset clearing ecosystem.
  • Handle regulatory requests, inquiries, and exams from relevant authorities (e.g., CFTC, NFA, SEC), ensuring timely and accurate reporting and compliance.
  • Monitor mark-to-market (MTM) pricing, settlement price determination, index pricing, and their impacts on client margin requirements.
  • Perform client onboarding risk assessments and conduct ongoing market, credit, and liquidity risk monitoring.
  • Lead new product listing and product design, analyzing market microstructure, asset correlations, and risk implications.
  • Design, calibrate, and review margin models, cross-margining frameworks, and liquidation strategies tailored to FCM requirements and diverse asset types.
  • Conduct quantitative research and scenario analyses to evaluate client and firm resilience.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of relevant working experience in risk management, trading, derivatives operations, or a related field (experience with an FCM or broker-dealer is a strong plus).
  • Degree or above in a quantitative discipline, with professional qualifications such as CFA and FRM an added advantage.
  • Proficient in Python and SQL.
  • Strong understanding of equities, commodity products, futures, perpetuals, and other derivatives, including their multi-asset pricing mechanics and funding rates.
  • Solid understanding of margin concepts, cross-margining efficiencies, liquidations, and direct trading experience (personal or professional).
  • Familiarity with CFTC, NFA, and SEC regulations is a strong plus.
  • Self-motivated, having the internal drive and motivation to begin and continue tasks independently without supervision.
