What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Deck Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Deck Designer, you need proficiency in architectural design principles, spatial planning, and a strong understanding of building codes, often supported by a degree in architecture, design, or related fields. Mastery of CAD software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit, along with knowledge of project management and collaboration tools, is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and attention to detail help you effectively interpret client needs and deliver visually compelling designs remotely. These skills ensure that designs are both functional and aesthetically pleasing while meeting client specifications and regulatory requirements, leading to successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by remote deck designers and how can they be managed?

Remote deck designers often face challenges such as limited on-site access, which can make it harder to visualize the space and communicate effectively with clients or contractors. To overcome this, they typically rely on detailed photos, measurements, and virtual meetings to ensure accurate designs. Building strong, proactive communication habits and using collaborative design software can help bridge the distance and ensure everyone stays aligned throughout the project. Additionally, understanding local building codes and materials remotely requires thorough research and sometimes direct coordination with local suppliers.

What is a remote deck designer?

A remote deck designer is a professional who creates plans and visual designs for decks, such as patios or outdoor spaces, while working from a remote location rather than on-site. They use digital tools and software to communicate with clients, understand their needs, and develop detailed drawings or 3D renderings of deck projects. Remote deck designers may collaborate with contractors, landscapers, or homeowners to ensure the design is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and compliant with local building codes. Their work often includes selecting materials, planning layouts, and offering recommendations based on the client's budget and space. This role allows for flexible work arrangements and often involves a mix of creative design and technical skills.

Job description

With a company culture rooted in collaboration, expertise and innovation, we aim to promote progress and inspire our clients, employees, investors and communities to achieve their greatest potential. Our work is the catalyst that helps others achieve their goals. In short, We Enable Possibility℠.
Position Summary
The Leadership Learning Experience Designer plays a critical role in the Leadership Development Center of Excellence (COE), designing high-quality learning experiences for leaders across the enterprise. This role blends instructional design, visual storytelling, and user-centered experience design to turn leadership frameworks, concepts, and expectations into learning that is clear, practical, engaging, and easy to apply at work.
The Designer owns the visual and experiential quality of leadership learning-creating polished, executive-ready PowerPoint decks for facilitated programs and designing self-paced digital learning and micro-learning that supports real behavior change.
Working closely with Leadership Development Partners and other key stakeholders, this role translates leadership strategy and content into cohesive learning experiences across live, virtual, and digital formats. The Designer applies adult learning, UX, and visual design principles to ensure leadership learning is consistent, scalable, and recognizable across the enterprise.
The ideal candidate takes pride in craftsmanship, has a strong design point of view, and is comfortable with learning flow, visual hierarchy, cognitive load, and storytelling. They use authoring and design tools and responsibly take advantage of AI-enabled tools to speed design and development.
This role is open to remote candidates, with a strong preference for those based in the EST or CST time zone.
Key Responsibilities
Learning Design & Development
  • Design and develop interactive eLearning, microlearning, simulations, and video using traditional authoring tools (e.g., Storyline, Rise, Captivate) and AI-assisted platforms.
  • Craft and enhance PowerPoint decks, job aids, and learning materials for instructor-led programs and ongoing performance support.
  • Apply user-centered, visual, and adult-learning principles to build intuitive, engaging learning experiences across modalities.

Learning Technology & Platform Support
  • Build, package, test, and publish learning content in LMS/LXP or other learning platforms (e.g., Docebo, Degreed), partnering with the learning systems administrator as needed.
  • Test learning content across devices/browsers and validate tracking/analytics (e.g., SCORM/xAPI) prior to launch; troubleshoot content-level issues and coordinate fixes with the learning systems administrator and vendors as needed.

Collaboration & Project Management
  • Partner with Leadership Development Partners, HR Business Partners, and other key stakeholders to appropriately scope requests, define outcomes, and translate objectives into learning solutions.
  • Manage timelines, review cycles, and deliverables; continuously improve the design/development workflow (including AI) where it adds value.
  • Develop facilitator guides, participant guides, run-of-show agendas, and supporting materials to enable consistent delivery of instructor-led and virtual sessions.

Content Governance & Standards
  • Maintain design standards, templates, branding guidelines, and QA checklists (accessibility, usability, tracking); document build/publish standards.
  • Maintain and refresh learning assets over time (updates, versioning, and retirements) based on business changes, feedback, and performance data.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508) and usability best practices.
  • Use feedback and analytics to evaluate effectiveness and iterate on learning assets.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Multimedia Design, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3-5 years designing learning experiences in a corporate/enterprise setting
  • Experience publishing content in an LMS/LXP and supporting launch/testing (not LMS administration)

Skills & Competencies
  • Proficiency in authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline/Rise, Captivate, Camtasia)
  • Working knowledge of SCORM/xAPI and responsive build considerations
  • Familiarity with visual design and video tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Vyond, Canva)
  • Portfolio or work samples demonstrating learning experience design and polished visual output
  • Ability to consult with stakeholders to clarify needs, define outcomes, and iterate based on feedback
  • Comfort using generative AI to create storyboards, refine content, and draft assessments
  • Strong attention to detail, creativity, and problem-solving
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a service-oriented mindset

Preferred
  • Experience with AI-assisted authoring tools (e.g., Workday Sana, Docebo Shape)
  • Background in user experience (UX) design or human-centered design
  • Experience running lightweight user testing/usability reviews and iterating designs
