What Does a Remote Database Developer Do?

A database developer or programmer creates and implements computer databases that store and maintain an entity’s data information. You work with clients to identify the best database management software and test the application or program for performance and efficiency. Your responsibilities include designing information systems to meet the needs of the client, testing product performance, performing data analysis, and developing documentation from your analysis. In some cases, you may also train or teach other developers or client teams. As a remote developer, you may complete your duties on your own or as part of a remote team for a corporate client or employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Database Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Database Developer, you need strong expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver solutions in a remote environment. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and reliable database solutions that meet organizational needs while supporting independent work and remote teamwork.

What is a Remote Database Developer?

A Remote Database Developer is a technology professional who designs, creates, and maintains database systems while working from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include developing database structures, optimizing queries, ensuring data integrity, and implementing security measures. They often collaborate with software developers and IT teams to ensure databases are efficient and meet organizational requirements. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks using cloud-based tools and secure connections, providing flexibility for both employers and employees.

What are some common challenges faced by remote database developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote database developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams, managing secure access to sensitive data, and troubleshooting issues without on-site support. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use secure VPNs and authentication protocols, and leverage collaborative tools like version control and ticketing systems. Regular check-ins and thorough documentation also help ensure everyone stays aligned and project progress remains smooth.

Job description

About Flyway Health
At Flyway Health, we start from a simple conviction: somewhere in every life sciences team's data is a finding that would change their next quarter, and we've built the system to go find it. Our autonomous agents run across a variety of healthcare data, surfacing the signals commercial teams don't have time to look for - shifting prescriber dynamics, gross-to-net drift, unescalated lookalike patients, payer coverage changes, and more, all discovered autonomously.
We've supported four launches in our first six months and are growing rapidly. We've raised roughly $4M to date and are backed by Pear VC, Greg Field, and a group of industry-veteran advisors - and we're here to change how commercial life sciences operates.
The Role
As Lead Account Strategy Partner (ASP), you own client delivery as our most senior ASP - running your own portfolio of accounts and setting the standard the rest of the team works to.
ASPs are the bridge between a client's commercial life sciences questions and the answers our system can produce. You do this work directly by wielding the system with skill, steering it, interfacing with our engineering team to integrate new datasets, and applying the judgment that turns raw healthcare data into insight a brand or market access team can act on. As the senior voice on a small, growing team, you set the bar for how delivery is done and help the ASPs around you do their best work - with the runway to grow into leading the function as we scale.
This is a hands-on, technical role. You'll be in the weeds: setting up and working through claims and other healthcare datasets, learning about new therapeutic areas, running analyses through our system, and interrogating what comes back. You'll need real comfort with the fundamentals of data science paired with the client instinct to turn a result into something a commercial team can act on.
What You'll Do
  • Own end-to-end delivery for your accounts: scope the client's question, run the analysis through our system, and deliver insights commercial life sciences stakeholders can act on.
  • Operate our proprietary agentic system day to day - directing it, integrating new datasets, and pressure-testing its output. The system is built; the skill is using it well and knowing which parts of the output are most pertinent to the client.
  • Work primarily with healthcare claims data, and quickly build intuition for the other datasets we use - picking up an unfamiliar dataset and understanding its shape and limits fast.
  • Read, follow, and reason critically about SQL and the results it returns.
  • Spot and account for the nuances of real-world healthcare data: sparsity, coverage gaps, claims lag, capture rates. Distinguish a genuine signal from a data artifact.
  • Translate fluidly between client commercial strategy and the technical realities of the data and the system.
  • As our most senior ASP, set the bar for how delivery is done and help the ASPs around you sharpen their craft - with the runway to grow into leading the function as the team scales.
  • Work directly with the founders and influence future product roadmap.

What We're Looking For
Required
  • Commercial life sciences fluency from day one - you understand how pharma/biotech commercial teams operate (market access, brand strategy, commercial analytics, patient journey, HCP targeting, etc.).
  • LLM-native: genuinely comfortable working with AI and agentic tools - prompting, steering, and evaluating model output is second nature.
  • A data science or data engineering background (either in training / in practice)
  • A sharp, analytical mind that interrogates data and outputs rather than taking them at face value.
  • Comfort with healthcare claims data, or the demonstrated ability to ramp on a new dataset very quickly.
  • Comfort in a client-facing role, with strong people skills.
  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience.

Nice to Have
  • Prior client-facing, consulting, or forward-deployed experience.
  • Familiarity with additional healthcare dataset types (EHR/EMR, lab, specialty pharmacy, etc.).
  • Light scripting (e.g., Python).
  • 5+ years of experience.

What We Offer
  • $150-180k base salary + stock options
  • Eligibility for medical, dental, and vision insurance, with employee premiums fully covered by Flyway
  • Hybrid NJ/NYC with flexibility for remote candidates
