What Does a Remote Database Developer Do?

A database developer or programmer creates and implements computer databases that store and maintain an entity’s data information. You work with clients to identify the best database management software and test the application or program for performance and efficiency. Your responsibilities include designing information systems to meet the needs of the client, testing product performance, performing data analysis, and developing documentation from your analysis. In some cases, you may also train or teach other developers or client teams. As a remote developer, you may complete your duties on your own or as part of a remote team for a corporate client or employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Database Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Database Developer, you need strong expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. What is a Remote Database Developer?

A Remote Database Developer is a technology professional who designs, creates, and maintains database systems while working from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include developing database structures, optimizing queries, ensuring data integrity, and implementing security measures. They often collaborate with software developers and IT teams to ensure databases are efficient and meet organizational requirements. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks using cloud-based tools and secure connections, providing flexibility for both employers and employees.

What are some common challenges faced by remote database developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote database developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams, managing secure access to sensitive data, and troubleshooting issues without on-site support. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use secure VPNs and authentication protocols, and leverage collaborative tools like version control and ticketing systems. Regular check-ins and thorough documentation also help ensure everyone stays aligned and project progress remains smooth.

Senior Software Engineer (Remote)

Vital IT Services

Allen, TX • Remote

$110K - $130K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 7 days ago

Job description

Vital Services is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our growing Information Technology team. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of, and play an integral role in, the expansion of our SaaS Development team.

As a Senior Software Engineer, your core focus will be to architect, build, and maintain high-quality, scalable software solutions across our service lines, while actively reducing technical complexity and mentoring mid-level engineering talent. You should be able to take direction and apply your aptitude in solving problems with the technologies used. You will apply up-to-date expertise as a Senior Software Engineer to meet and exceed our client's expectations. You will work closely with our customers, development teams, as well as IT Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Senior Data Engineer

In our organization, success in this seat of the Senior Software Engineer means own-and-deliver execution on these five core areas:

  • End-to-End Technical Execution: Architect and build high-performance applications, secure APIs, and scalable database schemas that operate seamlessly across complex, multi-system environments.
  • Complexity & Risk Reduction: Deconstruct ambiguous, multi-system technical challenges and "unknowns" into predictable, well-estimated execution plans during sprint planning.
  • Quality Assurance & Stability: Own the stability of code through production deployment, keeping escaped defects low and SaaS uptime high.
  • Cloud Infrastructure & Deployment: Manage and optimize cloud infrastructure to ensure high availability, security compliance, and seamless deployments.
  • Engineering Quality & Hygiene: Maintain strict standards for engineering practices, active participation in pull-request reviews, and pristine Jira discipline to ensure accurate operational visibility.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience: 5+ years of full-stack or backend software engineering experience (ideally in high-compliance environments like Insurance IT, FinTech, or healthcare).
  • Technical Skills: High level of proficiency with C#, T-SQL, ASP.NET, MVC, Web API, JavaScript, jQuery, AngularJS, HTML, CSS, XML, JSON, ASP, PHP or other various languages.
  • Application & API Architecture: Proven expertise in designing resilient, secure, and highly performant backend architectures and RESTful/gRPC APIs.
  • Database Engineering: Strong mastery of relational and non-relational database design, query optimization, and managing complex data pipelines.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Hands-on experience provisioning and managing cloud-native infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure) using modern DevOps or Infrastructure as Code concepts.
  • Operational AI Fluency: Demonstrated proficiency in using AI development tools to accelerate code generation, automate testing, and refactor legacy code safely.
  • Problem-Solving under Complexity: A track record of successfully navigating legacy architecture, external API bottlenecks, and heavy data environments.

Measurables

To give complete transparency, here are the numbers this role is accountable for keeping "in the green":

  • Sprint Say/Do Ratio: Greater than 80% predictability on committed sprint work.
  • Escaped Defects: Less than 3 critical bugs hitting production per quarter.
  • Jira & Documentation Hygiene: 100% compliance on task logging, estimates, and architecture updates in Confluence.

Compensation & Culture

  • Salary Range: $135,000 $160,000
    • Final offer will be commensurate with experience and technical assessment results.
  • Hybrid Flexibility: We value our culture in Allen, TX, but offer a flexible remote or hybrid schedule based on team project needs rather than a rigid "clock-in" or in-office requirement.
  • Growth Path: This position was opened due to new client projects and initiatives. As we provide white-glove MSP and SaaS services to our clients, this allows their businesses to grow and in turn allows us to grow. We invest in our employees and our client relationships, which has allowed us to continue to scale up and increase our capacity and growth trajectory.
