To thrive as a Remote COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant), you need an associate’s degree in occupational therapy assisting, national certification (NBCOT), state licensure, and a solid understanding of therapy interventions. Experience using telehealth platforms, electronic medical records, and secure video conferencing tools is typically required. Strong communication skills, self-motivation, adaptability, and the ability to build rapport remotely make candidates excel in this role. These skills ensure effective patient care, efficient collaboration with supervising OTs, and compliance with telehealth standards in a virtual environment.
As a Remote COTA, your daily responsibilities often include conducting virtual therapy sessions with patients, documenting progress in electronic health records, collaborating with occupational therapists to develop and adjust care plans, and providing therapeutic exercises and education through a telehealth platform. You may also be responsible for coordinating care with other healthcare professionals and supporting patients and their families in adapting to home-based interventions. While you’ll work independently during sessions, regular check-ins and coordination with supervising OTs and the broader care team are common. This remote structure allows COTAs to deliver high-quality, patient-centered therapy while maintaining flexibility and ensuring continuity of care.
