Job description

Assistant Controller

Aquaverse is hiring an Assistant Controller for a full-time remote position.

Remote position; required to be located in the EST or CST time zone.

ABOUT AQUAVERSE

Aquaverse is a private equity-backed residential pool services platform focused on acquiring, integrating, and scaling high-quality pool service businesses. The company is in the early stages of building the systems, reporting cadence, accounting processes, and controls needed to support continued growth.

This is a formative-stage finance environment. The right person will join early, raise the accounting standard, and work alongside the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as Aquaverse continues to grow.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller will be a hands-on accounting leader responsible for reliable close ownership, Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, accruals, reconciliations, reporting package support, outsourced accounting resource coordination, and core accounting discipline across the platform.

This role is designed for a high-potential accounting professional who understands Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), wants meaningful ownership, and can grow into broader controllership responsibility as the business scales. The role does not require a long-tenured controller background, but it does require strong accounting fundamentals, intellectual curiosity, process orientation, and the ability to learn quickly in a private equity-backed environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Close, Accounting and Controls

  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with U.S. GAAP, including general ledger integrity, chart of accounts discipline, and balance sheet support.
  • Own WIP schedules and related revenue, cost, accrual, and margin support, ensuring outputs are reliable, explainable, and consistently maintained.
  • Help develop practical accounting policies, procedures, and controls as the company scales.
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across the platform, ensuring it is completed accurately and on time with clear support.
  • Manage the flow of cash and ensure that we are receiving adequate weekly funding to facilitate the vendors getting paid timely
  • Manage and lead annual audits with external auditors

Reporting, Lender Support, and Analysis

  • Prepare and improve monthly reporting packages for the CFO, management team, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders, with a focus on clarity, consistency, and usefulness.
  • Assist with lender reporting, covenant reporting, and supporting schedules required under financing arrangements.
  • Support variance analysis, management reporting commentary, and explanations of key financial drivers.
  • Coordinate with the CFO to ensure financial reporting is complete, accurate, and delivered on time.

Acquisition and Integration Accounting

  • Assist with purchase accounting entries for acquisitions under Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 805, including opening balance sheets, fair value adjustments, and acquisition-related journal entries.
  • Support accounting integration of acquired businesses into Aquaverse processes, reporting packages, and control routines.
  • Help standardize accounting practices across newly acquired entities.
  • Partner with the CFO and external advisors on technical accounting matters when needed.

Outsourced Resources, Systems, and Process Improvement

  • Manage and coordinate outsourced accounting resources, ensuring deadlines are clear and work is timely, accurate, and aligned with Aquaverse standards.
  • Support ERP implementation and systems projects by helping define requirements, test workflows, document processes, and translate accounting needs into practical system workflows.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • Approximately 4 to 8 years of progressive accounting experience, with flexibility for exceptional high-potential candidates.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, accrual accounting, and core financial statement mechanics.
  • Hands-on experience with monthly close, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and ability to work with detailed accounting schedules.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving, private equity-backed environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, clear communication, and high ownership mentality.

Preferred, Not Mandatory

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA track.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed, multi-entity, acquisition-oriented, or roll-up environment.
  • Experience with WIP, job costing, project accounting, or service business accounting.
  • Exposure to ERP implementation, accounting system migrations, or process redesign.
  • Industry exposure to residential services, pool services, home services, route-based services, construction services, or field services.

ATTRIBUTES AND OPPORTUNITY

  • Curious, low-ego accounting professional with a team-first, hands-on approach.
  • Builder mindset with comfort operating in a company that is still developing systems, processes, and reporting discipline.
  • AI curious and open to using modern tools to create leverage, improve accuracy, and reduce manual work
  • High standards for accuracy, documentation, follow-through, and clear communication.
  • Direct exposure to the CFO and leadership team of a growing private equity-backed platform.
  • Opportunity to help build accounting infrastructure and grow into broader controllership responsibility as Aquaverse scales.
