Job description

Senior Manager, Technical Writing - Capital One Software (Remote)

Ever since our first credit card customer in 1994, Capital One has recognized that technology and data can enable even large companies to be innovative and personalized. As one of the first large enterprises to go all-in on the public cloud, Capital One needed to build cloud and data management tools that didn't exist in the marketplace to enable us to operate at scale in the cloud. And in 2022, we publicly announced Capital One Software and brought our first B2B software solution, Slingshot, to market.

Building on Capital One's pioneering adoption of modern cloud and data capabilities, Capital One Software is helping accelerate and secure the data management journey at scale for businesses operating in the cloud. If you think of the kind of challenges that companies face - things like data publishing, data consumption, data governance, data security and infrastructure management - we've built tools to address these various needs along the way. Capital One Software will continue to explore where we can bring our solutions to market to help other businesses address these same needs going forward.

This experienced Senior Manager of Technical Writing will sit at the intersection of leadership and execution. In this "player-coach" capacity, you will be responsible for defining our documentation strategy and mentoring a team of writers. Additionally you will drive development of technical documentation that translates complex information into user-friendly content that enables successful onboarding and utilization of Slingshot & Databolt by customers, partners and internal stakeholders. This candidate will be responsible for managing a team of technical documentation specialists and should have in-depth experience creating various forms of customer-facing documentation, including user manuals, help files, system integration guides, SDKs, API documentation, and FAQS . The candidate should be able to communicate complex information clearly and efficiently to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Act as the primary bridge between Engineering, Product Management, and Support to ensure documentation is integrated into the Software Development Life Cycle.

  • Create and implement documentation strategy within a cross-functional organization that supports documentation usability and innovation

  • Review documentation for consistency across processes through application of standards and style guides

  • Maintain and improve our Docs-as-Code workflow (Git, Markdown, CI/CD pipelines).

  • Transform complex, technical material into clear and concise documentation that will be read by target audience members such as Engineers, Product Managers, Architects, and Senior Leadership.

  • Create technical documentation for APIs, SDKs and integrations

  • Translate complex ideas into understandable logical concepts using both architectural diagrams and supporting descriptions

  • Write in a formal technical writing style (for example, active voice, implied you, consistent tenses, etc.)

  • Conduct in-depth interviews with subject matter experts to fully understand the architecture or products

  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers and architects on a daily basis to develop, publish and maintain high quality customer-focused documentation

  • Rely upon metrics and other forms of data to understand the variation in utility of the content, identify areas in need of review, and to drive planning & prioritization

  • Develop Content that drives searchability for SEO and LLM optimization

  • Maintain and continuously update content management system(s) of documentation
