Job Description
The Vice President of Mechanical Engineering Design is responsible for leading all mechanical engineering design activities across T5โ€™s data center development and construction portfolio. This role oversees mechanical design strategy, standards, quality, and execution for missionโ€‘critical facilities, ensuring alignment with T5โ€™s operational, performance, and reliability objectives. The VP will guide teams of mechanical engineering subject matter experts and external partners to deliver efficient, resilient, and costโ€‘effective mechanical systems for complex data center projects. A strong operational mindset and deep experience in missionโ€‘critical environments are essential.

Key responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement mechanical engineering design strategies that support T5โ€™s business goals and construction operations.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align mechanical design standards with overall project delivery objectives.
  • Drive innovation in mechanical systems design, energy efficiency, and operational performance.

Mechanical Engineering Oversight

  • Oversee the planning, scheduling, and execution of mechanical engineering design activities across all projects.
  • Ensure mechanical systems meet performance, reliability, scalability, and sustainability requirements for missionโ€‘critical data centers.
  • Review and approve mechanical design documents, specifications, and calculations.

Project Delivery & Operations Integration

  • Partner with construction, commissioning, and operations teams to ensure mechanical designs support longโ€‘term operational efficiency.
  • Monitor design progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies to maintain schedule and budget.
  • Lead value engineering efforts to optimize cost without compromising reliability or quality.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage internal mechanical engineering staff and external engineering partners.
  • Coordinate with HR and the EVP of Construction to recruit, train, and develop mechanical engineering talent.
  • Conduct performance reviews and establish KPIs for mechanical engineering excellence.

Quality, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Establish and enforce mechanical design standards, quality protocols, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify mechanical system risks and ensure appropriate insurance and riskโ€‘management measures are in place.

Stakeholder & Vendor Management

  • Cultivate strong relationships with clients, engineering firms, equipment vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Negotiate mechanical engineering scopes, contracts, and pricing to secure favorable terms.
  • Represent mechanical engineering interests in client meetings and project reviews.

  • Stay current with emerging mechanical technologies, cooling strategies, and data center design trends.

Key Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License (Required).
  • 10+ years of Mechanical Design and Engineering experience, required
  • Strong operational background within the construction or engineering industry.
  • Data Center experience, required
  • Experience leading Mission Critical projects (Required).
